August Grocery Challenge

Is it too early to start to think about August's grocery challenge (apologies if it is!!!)
This will be my 1st time (aarrgh!!!) Currently budget for £400.00 p/month to include all shopping, toiletries etc. We are a family of 4 (including 2 boys aged 2 & 5(next Thursday!)) From reading posts over last few months - feel this amount is a little excessive! Am hoping to cut out unnecessary purchases and will probably do a shop on-line (for the first time) to see if makes it easier. Hope to cut this down to £350.00 (5 week month.)
Youngest son now potty trained (yippee) so nappy/wipes bill reduced significantly- hopefully this should help.
Work part-time so cooking from scratch can be a little difficult some nights. Will try though!! Luckily kids like veg etc but not keen on many meats (mostly eat chicken.) Must check old-style recipies for inspiration!
Any ideas/tips/thoughts would be gratefully appreciated!!

Good morning all.
Here it is, the 28th already, so time to start off this month's Grocery Challenge.
I had intended during the course of last month to keep a check on my receipts so that I would have some idea of what to set for a budget when I joined the challenge this month. Unfortuantely the last month has been so atypical since I've been living almost entirely off the contents of my freezer and buying more ready meals (fish and chips, yum) because of having no kitchen and cooker that the figures I've got are useless.
So I'll be starting as a GCV again and just keeping records this month.
To all of you who started last month remember to only drop your budget by an amount you are sure you can comfortably do - this is all meant to be painlessHonest
Good luck to everyone taking part.

I have said this before, but for all the newbies to the challenge;
For the first month I took a guess at the budget but I really had no idea how much I was spending.
I found the best thing is to have a guess the first month but SAVE ALL OF YOUR RECEIPTS (and yes, that does include the ones from the local shop when you run out of milk), then at the end of the month add them all up and have a look if you were on budget, if not, it doesn't matter because your budget was a guess. For the next month you can use the total of your receipts and take a bit off to get a realistic budget, just shave off as much as you think you can, it could be £1 a week or £20 a week.
If you are currently spending £200 a month don't suddenly drop it to £100 - you'll never do it but if you cut £20 a month off for a few months you'll get there eventually without feeling you're missing out on anything.
You might think you've done everything you can in the first month but someone always comes up with a new idea and, if you try it you often find you save a bit more (unless you are SarahSaver who is an expert at this and could only save more if she turned her back garden into a paddy field and lived on rice) In the first month I thought, I'm planning meals, I couldn't possibly save anymore, but then I started double cooking and freezing, and making soup instead of buying it in tins.
I've been doing this since Feb but only saved ALL of my receipts last month, it has given me a much better idea of where it is all going. Budget for next month is £80 for 2 of us, I'll start on 30/4. I could probably save more, by eating different foods but I can afford to live on £80, I have saved a lot of money since Feb. and I don't waste food or money anymore. So I'm happy with my budget.

I normally start the new month off on the 28th which just so happens to be today. Give me a few minutes and I'll split your post out of this month and into the new one for you

How quickly time flies eh ? Well, my budget for 4 adults for all groceries and household stuff (after much discussion with the family) is £60 per wk. We have lots of stuff in the cupboards and freezer, so just buying fresh fruit and veg mostly. I don't think I'll be able to get any lower than that as 3 are on Atkins and 2 are blokes who eat me out of house and home
The bee in my bonnet this month is making my own sauces. Im going to start off making my own bolognaise sauce as we use that the most.
Good luck to everyone and happy budgeting"There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children; one of these is roots, the other wings" - Hodding Carter

I've set mine at £200 for the month for the 5 humans and 4 pets. All my cupboards and freezers are virtually empty so I know I'm going to need that much this month. Hopefully I can build stocks up a little.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Well, I wasn't going to do this until next month, but I figure it's just making excuses not to, even though we're grocery shopping tomorrow for the week, so I feel it's a bit like I'm cheating.
I'll start on the first, and I reckon for the four of us (2 adults, one nearly three year old and one seven month old) we'll need about £200. Allowing also for dd's christening mid month, I'm going to give us another £25, so a whopping £225 for the month. I think I'm being over generous to be perfectly honest, but I'll err on the side of caution this month, and we'll see if I'm right or wrong ...
I picked up the slow cooker yesterday, so there shouldn't really be ANY excuses now!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 002 :rotfl:0 -
How do you manage to keep to £200??? I really must be going wrong somewhere! What would be your advice re: where to shop? I tend to do supermarket shop once a week (mainly due to time constaints re: shopping at individual shops.)20p Saver Club #33 60p/£100

Hmmm, where to start. If you're doing mostly Supermarket shopping can you shop online at Tesco instead? That way you cut out a lot of impulse buys and you can usually find a code that works on the online voucher board.
Meal plan, work out what you are going to eat for the whole week incorporating any leftovers and using rubber chicken recipes. If you tend to buy ready meals then try bulk cooking and freezing, making your own means you get more for less money.

It's been a while since I done the grocery challenge but need to get back on track. For 2 adults and a part time dog I managed to get it down to about £100pm cos we were broke. But this time I'm going to concentrate on buying good food aswell and getting the meat from our butchers so am going to be generous and allow myself £150 this month and see how I get on.Total Debt (27th Nov 08) £16,707.03 Now £5,102.72Debt Free Date [strike]Nov 2012[/strike] August 20110

I was looking forward to starting this month (been lurking for a month and now plucked up courage) but thought I'd have to wait until Monday so I'm well chuffed!
I'm aiming for £100 a month and did my big 'payday' shop yesterday which came to £31.93. I didn't buy any meat or fish though so I'll need to stock up on that (after the TV programme last night, chicken purchase will be very low!)
I have fairly full cupboards and it's just me in the house so I think this *should* be achievable ...0
