Depression and Obesity. Thats me!

I have been an avid user of MSE for quite sometime now. This site has been a great asset to me and my family helping us sort and pay off our debts. However the debts are delt with now and a very close to finishing this isn't the problem anymore.

I have depression, anxiety and suffer socialphobia. also I am obese. These are my problems.

I need to lose weight. Actually I desperatly HAVE TO AND NEED TO LOSE THIS HUGE TRACTOR TYRE AROUND MY WAIST.

But how am I going to do this? I am 28 married with 1 daughter. Unfortunalty I can't work so income is tight. My husband doesn't work at the moment, he is my unpaid carer. I am currently recieving help from a CPN I am slowly working towards being at home on my own so at least husband can go out to work.

How can I shift this weight? I cannot go to pick my daughter up from school being this fat. I can't walk about and have people see me like this and look at me in total disgust it would tear me to pieces.

So my goals are for the moment :- Lose some weight so I can go out and hubby can go to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions how I can achieve this?

I need a diet of somesort, a structured plan to follow. I was thinkin of slimfast?

Thanks for reading, Sorry if I went on abit.

Lisa

  • Well done for posting, youve taken the first step to a positive change.

I gained a great deal of weight with my son, and it toke me 8 months to really be in the right mind set to lose weight.

Ive lost 1 1/2 stone so far in 6 weeks, with sw, its really easy to follow and you never feel hungry. Maybe give it a try, i know its the expence of paying to join etc, but health is much more important along with well being. maybe try your doctors, the nurses usually do a monitored diet plan, combine this with an excerside plan it will work. I walk everywhere now with my son in his buggy, start off with short walks, anything that makes you "warm" is increasing your heart rate thus using calories.

Good luck and take each day as it comes.

Lisa, I totally sympathise. Am overweight and have suffered from depression for years. Have only just began on the healthy eating path, but already feel so many positive benefits from it. However, the first step is so hard because you have to break the cycle of self loathing and comfort eating.

Slimfast seems to be good for a crash diet before a big event, but in the long run would probably get really boring and make you feel hungry and miserable. I tried it for a bit and suffered bad constipation for two weeks, then gave up cos I was so fed up of the plastic chocolate taste! You don't say how overweight you are, but seeing a Doctor might be a good start as they can refer you to a dietician (the waiting list is big, but it's worth waiting for), advise which diets work and maybe suggest drugs as a last resort.

Also, have a look on Amazon for diet books. You can read the reviews and see which ones work best. Personally, i'm on low GI and it's a good one for me because most of the foods can be brought fairly cheaply and I feel nice and full and energetic!

Phew, long post. Good luck! :j

Yes, I am (very) 'cuddly' too. I think seraphin is giving good advice. I know it's very difficult to go out, but I think it would be a great idea to join a local slimming group. You will find people to be kind and supportive. Take hubby along too.

If you are unsure about this, ring up the slimming group consultant and have a chat first. They have been overweight too and will totally understand.

Or you could try the doctor. I went on xenical (sp?) for a number of months. It worked for me without the leaky bottom side-effects. But it only worked if I addressed my diet AND did regular exercise. I had to go monthly to the doctor to get weighed and the next month's prescription. I stopped because of fitting in the visits with working, and I also cancelled my gym membership due to time constraints. Hmmm. Maybe I'll go back. I don't think I put the weight I lost back on...

  • Hello guys, thanks for posting!!

This morning I am having a scout around online to find a good diet book that I can work with. Thing is there is sooooo many different diets to choose from, so there is alot of reading to be done!

Thanks for the suggestions of joining a club but I really dont think I can do that just yet. I am working on it though so I wont rule it out.

seeing a doctor? to be honest I am sick of seeing the blinkin doctor lol!! but I will mention it when I next go see him.

By the way - I am a massive 6stone overweight. jesus that was hard to face up to yesterday. but I am going to be positive about this and shift it. I have to for me and my family.

Once I have found a good diet book I will visit the library (it will be a push to get me out but I have realise that there is no harm in me going to the library, its usually quiet so I should be able to manage it. I'll report back later!!

  • Re the slimfast.

I dont think its the way forwards is it? I'm not looking to crash diet and I too dont think I could manage the cardboard chocolate taste, or any of the other flavours come to think of it.

the Low GI diet sounds good, I like the sound of being energetic and of course losing weight, maybe I will look into this.

Thanks all for your kind suggestions!!

  • Hi Lisa

Well done for having a weight loss LBM.

I know your reluctance about going out etc. But I really do think that exercise is very important in weight loss, not just for the calorie burning side of things but also because it makes you feel so much better about everything. I've spent most of my adult life overweight (and am now probably as heavy as I've ever been :( ) For many years I took little to no exercise and now looking back I feel like I was sitting in a dark room. I started off by walking, gradually walking further and speeding up, and eventually got the nerve together to join a gym (believe me this was a long process!). I can't believe how much better taking regular exercise makes you feel. And believe me when I tell you I would barely have walked to the shop before.

I'd say start walking a bit. The other thing about it is that it gives you thinking time to focus on your goals and what it is you want from life. And this is really useful in reinforcing your dieting. In fact I think at the minute it's the fact that I'm not walking that has contributed to my weight gain even though I'm still going to the gym, I'm not getting the same thinking space.

If you worry about being seen then go after dark at least for the first little while.

Of course too it's worth looking at what you eat and eating better etc but honestly exercise will help you beat your depression!!

    Lots of luck
  • Hey Belfastgirl. I am hoping to start walking later at night and early in the morning leaving it a bit later in the mornings and a bit earlier every week so hopefully that will be a good start.

Re the Gi diet - I have got some books fom the library (well hubby did) and I have read them but I dont think its a diet I can do. it seems quite expensive and I really dont like bran flakes/allbran I dont like any nuts, and I cant stand wholemeal bread. the diet seems to be based around all of these foods. I don't want to start something I wont finish as i will feel like a failure :(

Its all so difficult. Even trying to find the right diet is a stuggle at this moment when all I want to do is get the ball rolling.

Maybe I am ment to be like this for the rest of my life, maybe I should get used to it.

    Lisa.

So what kind of foods do you like and at the same time afford right now? Perhaps if you posted here, some kind folks would be able to give you a better idea. Lots of people, like me, have been on loads of diets in their life times and have an idea of what does and does not workl.
congrats, on your plan to get walking. Exercise releases endorphins in the brain, and that elevates your mood, got to be better than taking a load of pills. Anything you can do to get toward your goal is good for your soul, so dont give up now, dont say you got to get used to it, because it clearly makes you unhappy. Just small steps, small changes will lead to results. You already know that from your succes at debt management.
  • Hi lisa, i would recommend weight watchers on-line to begin with until you are confident about going out and attending any meetings. Ive been a member of weight watchers since last june and have managed to lose 3 and a half stone and whilst i hav not tried the on-line site i have heard it is good from people i work with.

Also once you have lost a little weight and begin to feel more confident in yourself and about going out, go to your doctor and he should be able to enable you to attend weight watchers free if you have alot of weight to lose, i dont know the exact details of how you do this but i know it is possibe because some of the ladies at my meeting have a free pass from their doctor.

If you just google weight watchers and have a look at their site and all the success stories i am sure it will inspire you as it does me. By the way my friend who i go with was very large, around 23 stone i think, she lost 3 stone herself and then started attending classes with me for more motivation and has lost a further 4 stone!!!

I really wish you well lisa, lease let us know how you get on xxxxxxxx

to be honest i dont think diets work great to lose weight but the bottom line i think is its looked as a way of changeing your eating habits for life (which i think for most people it just doesnt work have you looked at your eating habits (my worst time is evenings)for nibbling ? do you eat not much but the wrong thing ?or do you maybe eat late at night .i know my weight gain is stopped smoking and nibbles if you can pinpoint i think it helps.i used allan carr to stop smoking its great and i found it very very helpful i know he does a book on weightloss maybe someone else on here can give an opinion.good luck anyway cos its not easy and i am struggling.x
