Just need to whinge

Don't get me wrong I know we are extremely lucky to have a roof over our head and there are people in worst states than us. But I have just rung the HA to find out where we are on the list only to find out we have gone down from 14th to 20th for a 3 bed house  . They start offering properties to people who are 10th and upwards:mad: . Apparantly we will get 2 more points for being on the list a year at the end of December, well whoop de doo!! I asked how many points we will get when the youngest turns one in June, as I was lead to believe that we would then be subject to overcrowding. Nope apparantly we will get an extra point when the 5 year old turns 14  .

The flat has raging damp in the bathroom and bedrooms. We thought it was coming in from outside. They've done tests and told us it's due to lifestyle!! In other words we have to many belonging and there is to much stuff and we are breathing creating condensation.. We are 5 people living in a 2 bedroom flat, what are we supost to do? They have suggested we open the windows. It's flippin' winter, we have night storage heaters which aren't very good anyway, I have a baby and a toddler and our electric bills are bad as it is. At the moment with the bedrooms and hall heaters beig on medium we are paying £45 a week. When the lounge goes on and I have to turn up the others the god knows what it will be  We have no heat in the kitchen and just one of those things that blow hot air in the bathroom.

Sorry guys I just really need to have a rant

    Oh Tiger hugs to you.

I don't know what to suggest, wouldn't CAB be able to help you out at all?? Maybe force them to install some better heating etc? Aren't there any other HA's in the area you could apply for maybe?

What's so fipping annoying about situations like this (IMO) is that some of the people who are being given accomodation have probably arrived here from another country having never done a bloody days work in their life and never having paid into the system here, but for some reason are able to jump the queue.

    Hope your ok. x x

    Hi Tigerfeet,

If there was some way I could just wave a magic wand and make everything perfect for you all then I most certainly would;:A you're one of the good guys and don't desreve to be in such unsuitable accomodation.

Have you given up on private landlords? I know they can be difficult to deal with at times, but there are some genuine ones:rolleyes:  around that have long term lets available (well statistically speaking there must be).

Have you thought of a de-humidifier? There could well be some reasonably priced ones around given that they're not specifically an item that's used a lot in the winter.

Other than that please feel free to whinge whenever you feel like it.:happyhear

    Thanks Claire,

We have had the Doctor, my occupational therepist, a couple of town councilors, our local MP and MEP all write to them about our situation. There is certain protocol they have to follow and they are doing so.

Our HA holds the list for the area unfortunatly. If I wanted to go to a village I would stand a slightly better chance. I am not allowed to drive medically.

Apparantly there is a rolling programme to replace the heating over the next 5 years and we are not going to have it done for a few years yet

The girl I was talking to said that basically they are waiting for old dears to pop their clogs so they can move families in.

I cleaned out under the boys beds yesterday, they are on the oppisite wall to the window and the smell of damp under there was horrible :(

    Hi Broken hearted,

Your ability to demonstrate "the milk of human kindness" is a role model for us all.
  • Hi Tiger,

Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, if things are going to disappoint us, it's at this time of year when household costs are at their highest. Did you get your flat on the basis of your council not being able to house you so allocating you to a HA, or did you apply to the HA yourselves? If the council were involved, I suggest you get another council surveyor or the Environmental Health in to do another assessment - if they only saw the flat in good weather, it would be worth calling them in as they won't have seen the flat at its worst, especially now you've had the baby.

Also, speak to your doctor, tell them about your housing conditions & ask for a supporting letter to give to the council/HA, as that might help your application. My old council flat didn't have central heating for my first 10 years or so, & it was so cold inside one winter that I could see my breath when I exhaled. It took a letter from my doctor for the council to agree to install the central heating. Letters from medical professionals seem to make a difference, so get your doctor & nurses looking after your children on the case. You could also speak to Shelter - besides advising you on your actual circumstances, they may be able to tell you of other organisations that can help you put pressure on the HA to sort the flat out. :)

It's only 26 November, so you've got a few weeks to go yet before you start getting paid to be a miserable old scrote. Take the day off while you can - once panto season starts, there might be a lot of demand for Scrooges & if you (& we) are lucky, you'll be so busy you won't have time to make such caring & thoughtful posts. You'll know when you're needed - you'll see people laughing & enjoying themselves, & you'll feel an irresistable urge to ruin their fun.

Thanks Richard, yes I am looking into a dehumidifier but I am trying to find out how much they will cost to run. because the leccy bill is high enough as it is  . Being on a meter focusses the mind on how much you are spending.

A house to suit our needs in the private sector it will cost us 3x our HA rent

When I posted this I knew that you wouldn't be able to resist putting your nose in.

BH I am having a bad day, this is one thing out of a catalogue of things today and I just needed to whinge to get it off my chest. Somedays are like that.

The reason we have a HA flat is our business went belly up and I was attacked and severly injured at work and have been unable to work since. We lost our house which was big enough and spent 9 months living in one room in a B&B with my eldest son untill we were given this flat. So I do know what is like being in a really bad situation. It took us 5years to have our 1st child and 2 1/2 years for our second and I am forever grateful to the medical professionals that helped us. Child 3 is a bit of a miracle and shouldn't really be here according to the Dr's, he is our bonus. We didn't set out to have 3 children in a 2 bed flat.
