16-24 Yrs Old? Get 217 texts & 43 free minutes

Options
Updated 8 July 2008

What's the deal?

Blyk is a new mobile provider which is offering anyone between the ages of 16 and 24 a free sim card with 217 free texts and 43 free minutes; on the con side you'll receive lots of texts from advertisers.

What's the catch?

It'll send you up to 6 picture adverts to your handset per day. Simply use the sim card to bag the free minutes and keep your usual sim card for other calls over the allowance.

Get a free sim

To get a free sim, simply go to the site and follow the instructions on the front page which say Text JOIN to 82595. (This text will cost you your standard rate). Fill in your details and provided they check out Blyk will send you your free sim.

Blyk sim cards can only be used with mobiles that have MMS picture messaging and browsing (WAP) capabilities. If your handest is locked to your existing network provider read the Unlock Your Mobile article.

How does it work?

It's a clever marketing ploy. Blyk has access to a list of young consumers which is an advertisers' dream. It charges the advertisers cash to send you texts and shares a slice of that with you in the form of free minutes and texts.

You must be 16-24

This is offer is only for 16-24 yr olds and Blyk will verify this. You must have a permanent residence in mainland Britain, which sadly means you can't join Blyk if you're in Northern Ireland, The Isle Of Man or the Channel Islands. Your registered address (taken from the elecoral roll) will be checked against a database.

The best way to use this

Blyk can track how many picture messages you receive and you will need to keep your phone switched on during the day when they are send to be elgible for the free minutes and texts.

Therefore, the best thing to do is put the sim card in a spare handset so you can leave it on during the day until you have reached the quota of picture messages; and effectively you use it as an additional phone to get your free texts with. If you fail to receive the message three months in a row Blyk will terminate the service.

Extra call charges

If you go over your free bundle of 217 text or 43 minutes you'll be charged 10p/text and 15p/minute. That's not too cheap, so ensure you've another Sim or phone deal to use it with: read the Cheapest Mobiles article

Porting your number

There has been some bad feedback from users reporting that Blyk have been very slow at porting your number (when you take your old number to your new provider), with some even saying it has taken up to 7 weeks.

  • Hi, my 17 year old son is wanting to join this, however he doesnt have a passport or driving license, any ideas what other checks they do to ascertain their age? And do you have to post information of to them or do they carry out checks on national insurance number etc automatically?

    Thank you :)

I had an invite for this but didn't feel comfortable with giving them either my passport or driving licence number so didn't bother.

silverangel35 - it asked me to provide either a driving licence or passport number.

So I give them my passport number - how do they know what age you are from that? Surely the authorities wouldn't just hand that information over willy nilly?
  • Your passport number contains your date of birth (I think...), but I suppose someone could just make this up?

My passport number doesn't (or at least not in an obvious way).

Driving License: xxxxx YMMDDY xxxxx xx (e.g for someone born 15th Aug 1863, middle digits would be 608153)

Passport: passport no., followed by GBR, then 6 digits YYMMDD (for above example would be 630815), then other codes representing data such as sex and expiry date. There are some random digits inserted in places between these different bits of information, but just have a look..you'll see your DOB in there.

You're referring to the machine readable part rather than the "Passport Number" (mine was issued in 2000 so could be different to newer ones), it is a 9 digit number which does not have my DOB in it.
