American Airlines Mastercard Deal

What’s the deal?

American Airlines is offering MasterCard holders 50% off Economy Class return flights to the USA if you book by telephone before 31 Aug 07 and travel between 1 Nov 07 - 14 Dec 07 and 25 Dec 07 – 20 Mar 08. More details.

What else should I know?

The 50% is only off the flight price, not taxes, which will be added once the discount has been taken off, and it may not always be a direct route. Route map.

Is this a good deal?

If you want to fly AA, then yes it is; but if you just want to fly, even at half price it isn't guaranteed to be the cheapest. Certainly check out and see if you can find flight prices, but then also use mycheap flight finding article to compare what the best of the other airlines is. It may even be possible to get AA flights cheaper through some of the brokers own special arrangements. Having done a few comparisons this deal wins less than 50% of the time, but enough to make it worth while.

As a final note, from personal experience one big advantage of AA is decent leg room in economy!

How to book?

You can either have a look online first to see the time and date slots you want to fly and then call the telephone line to make the booking or just call up to discuss which date and times are available.

You should then call American Airlines on 0845 7789 789 and quote the code MCXTRA. It is open from 9am to 5pm 7 days a week.

Example flights:
  • Flying to New York from London on 6 Nov 07 returning on 20 Nov costs £375 from American Airways online. Telephone price - 50% of flight @ £240 = £120 plus £155 tax = £275, saving £100. Expedia price £290, saving 6%.
  • Flying to Las Vegas from Manchester on 6 Nov 07 returning on 20 Nov costs £410 from American Airways online. Telephone price - 50% of flight @ £310 = £155 plus £155 tax = £310, saving £100. Expedia price £400, saving 29%.

MCXTRA isn't working on the AA site for me. Comes up saying Promo code is not valid. Maybe only works if you book by phone.
