PMS Challenge - June 2007

Options
Welcome to June's PMS Challenge :D

For any new comers the full instructions can be found in this post

This month there are quite a few demands on the budget. Three extra birthdays which I hadn't budgeted for in previous annual budgets (only found out their birthdays a few weeks ago!).
I could draw from the amount I set aside each month for annual expenses such as birthdays/Christmas but I'm also going to have a good nosey around in my gift cupboard to see if there is anything appropriate in that. The cards I will make from supplies I already have.
Either way, it shouldn't dent into my monthly budget at all.

Still need to make some tweaks though because I'm also replacing my car during this pay month and that will eat up all my savings from the car fund which also has to cover insurance, mot, tax and repairs. So, I'm setting myself a target of 5% reduction in actual spending from this months budget. This will need to be actual rather than virtual.

Good luck to everyone who takes part this month

  • Hi Queenie
I would like to joing the PMS challenge for June. My month starts on the 01st June as I get paid on the 31st May. I was doing really well in February on all the various challenges, but have since spent the last three months off sick with a bad back and everything has come to a halt since.
This will be my new start for the year and am really looking forward to it so much. Want to get back on track as I was so proud of my achievements before, so time to kick my own butt and start again.
    Thanx

I'm sorry, but PMS always makes me think of forum shorthand for something quite rude:o

    Hi all

I'm in again this month. No particular target but hoping to use the savings to buy more time/money saving bits. We were talking about a wind turbine thing on the roof this morning but I think that might take an awful lot of PMS to get there :rotfl:

I also like to use this challenge along with the Grocery one and meal planning to try and tighten our belts as much as I can without "missing out" so that we can either pay off debts much quicker, or I can go back to work part time rather than fulltime in the New Year

    Good luck all

Here in June but will be blowing all my PMS savings in the second week then restarting, been saving them for holidays. Just as proof of what you can do when you put your mind to it here's my year since Xmas so far.

What I have saved on - using codes for shopping online, bogofs and flog offs, reducing my grocery spending by more than half! resisting things I don't need, several storecupboard challenges inc the bathroom/cleaning ones, ebay sales (pitiful £50 but hey it's something) using the car less, cashback from quid co etc

Bought with PMS savings since Xmas - new clothes for me, American Style Fridge (always wanted one and couldn't afford it) full years tax for my car (never been able to do more than 6 months before) food processor.

What's left for the holiday, well it's 4 figure sum put it that way, intend on having a great time and not a penny on a credit card etc :D Actually I'll probably be frugal and come back with some but hey ho it's there!

    ;) See it's well worth a go

I'll be with you all squeezing every last saving to add for the hols fund until the 11th, then back on the 16th with probably an empty pot to start for Christmas
One day I might be more organised...........
    GC: £200

Firstly, very well done on all the tweaks and savings :T :T :T

Just really wanted to say ...

.. car tax (and insurance, and birthdays/Christmas/Easter/clothing/uniforms) really and truly they are recurring annual expenses and should be budgeted for as such :o If you rely soley on PMS money, you could find yourself on a sticky wicket.

I have (in addition to my PMS) what I call my Freedom A/c. In my Freedom A/c I pay in a regular amount to cover the costs of annual expenses, plus a little extra to cover unexpected expenses, ie: car repairs. It's a bit tricky to begin with, but as it's an accrual account it soon balances out. Plus, as an example, when my car insurance is due, if I get it for a slightly less amount than I've expected to pay, the difference hits the PMS pot! Likewise with the community charge - I pay by DD, but that takes only 10 monthly payments, thus leaving me two months of non payment in a calendar year = two months of com. charge into the PMS Pot :D (minus the initial increase in com. charge  ).

As you have now *invested* in 12mths road tax, divide that figure by 12 and put that 1/12th into your freedom a/c in preparation for NEXT year's road tax. Make it a monthly "bill" to be paid, just like any other bill; the difference is twofold:-
    1) instead of paying in arrears, you are saving in advance and will have accrued the full amount by the time of renewal
    2) you will *gain* interest on that amount over the next 12mths = extra PMS :D:D:D

It was just the extra that came from the PMS pot, had thought about that bit myself. I had £100 budgeted for 6 months tax in stamps, but topped it up for the year, means I also have the left overs in November :) as I had budgeted £100 for that too, which will go in the Christmas pot. If I wasn't going to gain by it I wouldn't have but there is an admin charge on 6 monthly tax which I will also save which is £9 for each 6 months disc, so saving £18 just on that over the year.

I've put way too much thought into this :rotfl: can you tell :o

Taking on board what you're saying as I have given myself 12 months before it's due (if I keep the car) I will be able to put away £15 a month for the next one :) saving me the £18 on next years too. Now it's just where to put it, thanks for the ideas Queenie :) Car repairs is a good idea, we budget seperately for MOTs costs of £100 inc parts and tests maybe it's a little low (we have managed it this year on less but you never know) save on spending by doing the work ourselves but the parts can be a little steep sometimes so might put a little aside for that.

Planning on another debt free Christmas so need to get things right again, last year was such a relief (even with paying £500 for a laptop for my Dad :o big daft pressie but he's worth it, oh and several spa days I really went OTT but all with cash :D ) not having to pay for it now, as every other year I've still been paying for the Christmas before when the next one comes around.

I have a sneaky feeling I somehow ended up with more in my PMS pot that I actually did save last month :o But I'm not taking it out now :rotfl:

Sooo... I'm going to keep a little track on here as a spread sheet at work and one at home did work out like it normally does for my monthly finances sheet (but then I suppose this moves more often that my finances do)

Today I opened the first of a pair of tubs of flora spread that was on BOGOF last month from Mr T's online specials. So, half of the free 98p tub is a saving of 49p for the PMS pot.

  • Hi everyone.

I am so jealous! All that money saved and I'm just starting on Friday. Am really looking forward to it.

My birthday is next month so am hoping to at least save some money towards it, am going to the seaside for a day out. I have four weeks to save towards it so am hoping to do so, even if I can't save enough it means that I can use less money from my pay.

I am also going to then start saving towards my birthday next year as I would like to go to Prague for my 40th next year without having to use my credit cards so have something important to save up for.

Thanx guys reading your posts really encourage me so much.
