MERGED: Changing Suppliers

Hi

Having read lots on the sight re changing utilities - it is clear that I would benefit by doing this. However I get elec & gas from the same provider and pay bills by direct deposits, I get sepeate statements for each and am in credit by nearly £200 on each. My questions are :- what happens to the overpayments - do I have to claim them back before switching or will they be transferred onto new provider?, and can I switch one ie gas but leave the electricity where it is?

Any advice gratefully reveived, also forgive my lack of knowledge of email/internet procedures my excuse is I,m just learning bit of a late starter I,m afraid!

many thanks

  • I started the switching process to Powergen in Jan.

I had a look at my bank balance today via the internet, and noticed a credit from British gas for £98,so they have automatically refunded any overpayment in my case.

I've just switched to Powergen from them and they sent me a cheque to cover my credit, most of which is their prompt payment discount.

I would have thought as your contract is with present supplier, they have no right to forward it anywhere else therefore you should get refund. If you leave one where it is, check that you are not losing some benefit you might be getting from having both provided from them.

  • Hi - hope this doesnt annoy anyone, I did try a search for my question but didn't come up with anything.

    So here goes:

I've bought a new flat and will need to connect to gas & electric.
I live in Scotland how to I go about getting the best deal?

I dont have any previous bills to use as a guideline?

Really would appreciate your expert help.

    thanks in advance,
    Alison
  • oh, thanks didnt know I could do that?

    Will check it out.
    Cheers,

  • Hi Martin,
Just to say that I did a price comparison last June and changed over to Scottish Power online. Since when I have had endless trouble. I have now changed back to British Gas as I got a £18,000.00 gas bill for 1 months supply and am still battling to get a fair and just reading. My change over to Scottish actually cost me £100.00 more than the bills during the period of June to Feb, I would have expected to get in that period of time had I stayed with British Gas.

I have to pay up (not the £18,000) they have agreed that is incorrect but I am still awaiting a bill for £150.00 to settle my account otherwise I will probably become a bad debtor.

It was not a simple move and was frought with difficulties, some of which I caused because I read my gas meter incorrectly and they accepted the figures, when British Gas actually said they should have realised that the figure was incorrect.A six figure rather than a 4 figure number.

What a mess and still not resolved. So take care out there when changing things may not always be so simple.

At present we have Gas & Electricity from British Gas and am considering changing.

However to due to estimated bills for the last year and British Gas failing to set up direct debits we have a debt of £170 for the gas but a £210.03 credit on our electricity bill (for which we had the cheque for last week!)

So the situation is that whilst we could change our electricity supplier now we couldn't with the gas as there is now way we could pay £170.

Is it better to wait so that we can change the gas and electricity over at the same time or should I look into changing the electricity now and the gas later on (am expecting gas usage to fall as we only use this for heating)

Also we have British Gas cover for our boiler - would it be possible to keep this with British Gas or would we have to look elsewhere for cover?

Why don't you use the cheque you had last week to pay off your gas bill?

I have just moved from BG to Powergen for both but have kept BG 3* cover. Use one of Martins switch links to find best deal for your area and MSE gets the referral fee.

I only received my february pay last week (cashflow in company very tight at the moment!) and I'm not convinced we'll receive March's on time so every penny was/is precious for other more interest bearing debts!

I think you will find that Electricity from BG, while not the cheapest by any means, is more competitive than their Gas prices.

Although it is not much, you will also lose your dual fuel discount if you just change electricity.
