This is one of my regulars- Wartime eggless chocolate buns

It makes really moist chocolatey buns.I've used butter instead of marge for flavour.

    Sift together
    8 oz self-raising flour
    1 oz cocoa
    3 oz sugar

Melt 3 oz butter and add to the bowl.

    In another bowl,pour
7.5 fl oz of hot water
    Add
    1 tbsp golden syrup
    1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

It will fizz, add it to the rest of the ingredients and mix well.
Spoon into greased bun tins and bake at 180c/gas4 for 15 mins.

This mixture usually makes about 15 buns so use 2 12 hole tins.
I like to top these with melted chocolate.Buttercream is good too.
You can also add orange zest.
I would imagine the butter could be replaced with vegetable oil

Another good one was this which I tried this morning, although I found you needed to raise the oven temp a bit.

I've just eaten two of thriftlady's buns I just made. :o I wanted to make something for DH to come home from work to too (he's not a Daddy though) and came onto OS to search for eggless recipes as we have lost 2 of our hens recently and the other 4 aren't laying well so no eggs today. :( I tried searching but "eggless" didn't occur to me and "egg-free" didn't work... I was just about to give up when I saw this thread. Thanks! :T :j

    Glad to help:T

The recipe is based on one from The Victory Cookbook by Marguerite Patten (very closely based:o ).There are many egg-free bakes in her wartime books.
