What's the deal?

Version 5 of Quark is being given free as a CD (or DVD for a wee bit more) on the front cover of Computer Shopper magazine, which cost £3.50. This software usually retails for between £600 and £800 depending where you get it from, though some techies don't believe it's worth that much.... .thought whatever its worth, if you're going to use it, this is a serious bargain.

What is QuarkExpress?

It's A desktop publishing software which can design and publish print and web documents. It can create layouts for newspapers, magazines, user guides, annual reports, brochures and catalogs. It's used by many ad agencies, newspapers, magazines and book publishers.

How to get it

Magazine Computer Shopper are currently giving away a full version of QuarkExpress 5 with all copies of the January magazine. The magazine costs £3.50. Simply grab the magazine and ensure it has the CD taped to the front.

Why's it doing this?

Currently you can get up to version 7 of QuarkExpress, so it's unlikely the company is making much money out of selling version 5.

By giving away a free copy of version 5 it gets extra exposure of its product, and it makes you register so it hopes later you'll pay to upgrade to a newer version. Plus it means that those pirated copies that are being sold out there will be devalued, and Quark can keep control of its own product.

  • Hi,

Been getting the money tips email for a while, but this offer motivated me to join the forums.

Now, any of you with any professional design knowledge knows QuarkXpress is the industry standard for paper media design.

We've all looked at the prices, even for an old version you are looking at 100s of pounds (for a legit copy).

Now, the Magzine Computer Shopper has gotten together with the people over at Quark and are offering QuarkXpress 5 "free" (just to give you an idea, the Agency I work for mostly use version 4.1..) on thier cover CD. Mag retails for £3.50.

Now the conditions: basically, you use it free, but you have to create an account at Europe website for Quark, and have to register your copy first. (read the instructions carefully)

However, the offer is only open to the UK.

However (again) you are allowed to have up to 2 corporate copies (so a massive freebie for smaller design companies, though read the terms and conditions to be sure).

It also gives you a choice of upgrading to Quark 7 (for around £293 per copy, RRP is £880), restricted to 2 corporate copies.

The magazine will be off the shelves soon so dive in there and get it!

One last downside, you need to have registered your copy by 25th Jan 2007. (but that shouldn't be a problem)

Anyway, hope this is of use to you all.

A tremendous bargain Adman, Quark is the Industry Standard. Most newspapers are put together using it and most use versions older than "5"

Do you know which month's edition this is on please?
  • It's Issue 227 (Jan 2007)
  • Thanks for this. However do you know if this is this just a PC version or will it also work for the Mac? Somehow I doubt it.

    thanks

Which edition of computer shopper, I have just given by recent edition to the IT guy at work.

This is all above my head, but will it be of use to my lb who has his own business??
ACII and Chartered so now I can focus on learning to play my beautiful Sax. 🎷
  • Windows version only I'm afraid ;)

    The Step-by-step says

"Each serial number of QuarkXpress 5 is licensed to be installed and run on one computer only. An individual or organisation is only permitted to install up to two licenses of QuarkXpress 5 provided that the equivelent number of magazine cover disks has been purchased."

Organisation seems to suggest it's fine for business purposes (though I suggest reading the terms and conditions carefully, so I take no liability :p)

Incidentaly, the email with the key does not come through straight away.
  • You can take out a subscription for 3 Issues of Computer Shopper for £1

Might be worth phoning to make sure you get January 2007 issue. Tel: 0845-1260389 or 01795-414600 (geographical tel) quoting offer code given on link :D
  • Is this a time limited deal (sometimes the software lasts for 6 months, or is a cut down version). Even with the extra revenue from the PC mag, if they can sell this for hundreds then giving each copy for nothing isn't going to be making them much profit. But I am interested if this is what it seams

So, I've got it up and running and I have a few extra bits of info.

Probably a bad idea to sign up with a Hotmail address, there seems to be a problem getting thier emails through the spam filtering.

However, you can retrieve your key from a link at the top, so that's not too annoying.

Incidentally, if anyone has any problems installing this drop me a PM and I'll see if I can help.

I've got it open now and had a good hunt around, and have seen no information suggesting this is time sesitive software.

What some companies do is offer old versions (in this case 2002) to give people a taste and that hooks them into possibly buying the newer software, Quark (to my knowledge) has not done this before, and it's about time.

I don't blame you for being sceptical. I can not repeat the exact words I said to the designer who told me about this, but it generally went, "here's the other leg, it has got bells on"

But think about it, 5 is years old now, and they have 7 to tout, so any extra revenue is gratefully recieved and it's great PR for them.

Anyway, for all intents and purposes, it looks like it really is a full and non time trialed version.

Time to go and play with my new pretty

    :)
