I've had quite a bit of success (certainly with selling books) on eBid (http://uk.ebid.net/) It's free listing there too, although there are a few hidden costs if you sign up to their secure payment system.

There is also Tazbar which has opened up recently (http://www.tazbar.com).

But, sadly, it seems that for the most part, eBay has the whole auction thing sewn up and all the other auction sites never seem to get a chance to get off the ground.

Unfortuately the majority of the public only remember the name of ebay. It takes a lot of money to get the brand known, and like it or hate it, ebay have certainly done that.

From a buyers point of view, why would they look at other sites first when they have more chance of finding the thing they want on eBay. Because of the competition on eBay it is also likely to be found cheaper too than on some other site.

If an ex eBay buyer moves on because of a bad experience on eBay I think it is probably likely to put them off auction sites altogether and they will simply shop from other internet retailers....after all much of the stuff on eBay can be found by savvy searchers elsewhere for less with more security when purchasing.

I have very rarely bought from ebay. I will often have a look on there, but tend to deal with companies who have a proper phone number where I can speak to someone and as kevinyork more security of purchase.

I think the only real competition to Ebay would be if Google set up an auction site, no one else is big enough to take them on
  • Didn't Hugh Scully leave the BBC's Antiques Roadshow to work for an online auction house called QX?
