Daily thread, what do you think?

Options
:hello: Good Day to my fellow OS'ers :)

Yes, I'm beginning the thread incredibly early, but I have a reason and I hope you'll all bear with me while I explain it.

It's been brought to my attention, that the daily thread is now becoming somewhat removed, in some people's perception, from it's original "intended" purpose. Why is this any of my business? Well a few reasons. Firstly, I was the instigator of the daily thread in Old Style and for that, I feel a certain degree of responsibility - daft, maybe, but I would feel uncomfortable if it received negative attention.
Secondly, when it was in it's infancy, it soon drew the attention of some people in Money Saving Towers. Bear with me here, if you would please. The powers that be in MST, provide a free, moneysaving forum, free of ads, free of subscription for the overall purpose of saving *you* money. However, the cost of running a website isn't free when you are talking of the huge number of people who visit one of *the* most popular UK websites. It costs time in monitoring, it cost bandwidth and blah-de-blah.
One of the aspects which was brought to my attention around that time is, the need to curtail too many "chatty" threads because (and rightly so) they detract from those wishing to find answers to their moneysaving dilema's or learn new money saving ways and, if a chat was what was needed, there is always The Arms.
So, when the daily thread began, there was some concern. I am grateful that, through PM's, I was able to discuss this with those concerned, explain the idea behind the thread and that the daily wasn't just an excuse for a chatty thread per se, but, at that time, it contained lots of tips, ideas and motivation in how to live the OS way, how to incorporate OS ways and means into our daily lives, dealing with the never ending housework/clutter issues, meals/menu's/hm stuffs and to support one another in their OS endeavours. I even printed off every page up to that point and went through all the figures to support the why's and evidence the wherefore's. All good moneysaving stuff when it was broken down into facts and figures! :D

On that basis, the daily threads were able to continue and, subsequently, flourish :j :j

In latter times, that emphasis has altered; naturally so, conversation is fluid and will ebb and flow. However, the consequence of that is, the 'daily' has evolved to less and less an expression of old styling and more and more into a diary of daily life irrespective of whether it is OS or not.

I know from recent posts that the level of posts has increased to such a degree that those reading it to garner inspiration and motivation, find that before the day has barely begun there will already be X number of pages to read.

It has reached such a level where the race is seriously on to be the first poster of the daily, even if that means the thread is begun a few minutes after midnight and often with little OS relevance in it's true form, simply and purely to be the first poster! Hence my jokey thread headed 5th Nov.

If we are posting simply to be the first to post, then we have lost the reason and benefits of the having a daily thread!! That would be a very sad day indeed and almost an abuse of the forum and Martins benevolence in providing a "free" site. What then could be the real consequence? We could lose it, pure and simple!

If we lose sight of the fundamental intention of the daily, it becomes invalid and superfluous. I really wouldn't want that to happen because I do know that there are many lurkers, OS'er new and old who have gained so much from the daily thread.

There are AE's who will be tempted to come in and comment inferring that I'm merely miffed because I don't get to start the thread. Please do your research and save your breath ;) I haven't begun the daily for a very long time, nor do I run my life or self worth around any website! A number of days, sometimes weeks, can pass between my visits and that is because I am busy *being* OS, not just talking about it ;)

If anyone wants to query my motivation for this post, it is very simple. It has been brought to my attention and I would be saddened to lose it, not for myself, but for *all* those who read it, use it and still feel motivated/inspired by it.

At this point, no one has suggested we'll lose it; let's not give anyone the opportunity to do so ;)

Thank you for reading this far.

    For info: Pages per view

You might need to alter your pages per view settings in your user CP. (Ok, that won't prevent the same number of posts in the thread, but it can alter how many 'pages' you need to go through).

To do this, click on "User CP", then "Edit Options"; scroll down for "Thread Display Options" ... now you can choose from between 5 through to 40 posts per page. This can make a significant difference in how many pages long a thread appears to be. Up to 8 times the difference if you have it set at 5 and then alter it to 40 posts per page ;)

    HTH :)

Hi Queenie, could you please give me some examples of what a typical daily thread should read. I love hearing that people have the dw, wm, bm and sc on early in the morning it gets me very motivated, I also like the ideas of breakfast, lunch and dinner that people have, as it gives me ideas of what to cook here. What else could we include?

Me too FZ wanab, I find it motivates me, 9 times out of 10 I have nothing OS to input at all but I feel the OS 'community' that is on this board refreshing and I like to share what I have done/doing with the people on here. I have tried other boards on here but I had rude responses so I stopped posting, does this mean I should just read the posts now and not respond if I dont have anything OS to add:confused::confused:
I have had moderators move posts of mine if in the wrong place too??

Funny you should say that, I've just read a "New Thread" which are examples of the sort of posts I would expect to find in the daily thread How OS? people who are now incorporating OS ways into their lives! In that example they are not speaking of one day though but their achievements in Old Styling.

The forerunner to the daily threads were actually called "Now & Then .... " and the orignal: - "Now and Then 28 Feb - 6 March 2005"

If you want to trawl through from the beginning of the daily's you can find them all listed in the Old Style Daily Archives which is listed in Our Old Style Indexed Collections

Board guides will move threads if they are in the wrong place. They are volunteers and that is a part of their role to place posts/threads in the most appropriate place for the subject matter.

May I just ask, you say the thread motivates you, so I'm assuming it motivates you to do something that is deemed OS? If I've got that right, surely then it means that you will have something of an OS theme to post about?

I'm highlighting that particular remark simply because the question begs to be asked, do you think that posts you have made are other than OS based then?

I'd also like to reiterate, the way the OS daily has evolved from it's original purpose has been brought to my attention.

    Dont stop posting.

I am sure that I am not the only one who would miss you a lot.

OS surely can be indirect rather than spelt out.

The people who post on the daily thread live it - they do not have to spell out every little detail.

The amount of support and help on this one thread is amazing!
