Bath draining very slowly

Every few months the usual happens with the bath drain, it slows down and doesnt drain very quickly. Up until now I have always resorted to Mr Muscle or other such plug hole unblockers but was wondering if there is a cheaper and less chemical way of unblocking the plug hole?

You could try Bicarbonate of Soda. Put it down the drain and leave it for about 30 minutes and then flush it down with boiling water.

Cheaper is to use Soda Crystals. Every month, I pour a solution of soda crystals dissolved in very hot water down the plugholes (and drains).

I keep soda crystals in the house anyway because it's great as a pre-soaker for gungy washing and I also use it in the laundry wash.

    This older thread may help:

    Sink seriously blocked - help!
  • 'Sink' thread is great, but taking the u-bend off a bath is much more difficult - usually includes taking the side off the bath, lying on back etc etc.

Simpler remedies first - the curtain hook thing is a good idea. If you gently lower a hook down the hole and then pull it up, you are likely to get lovely clots of hair and gunk out. It's a fairly revolting job, but strangely satisfying as well, to get rid of all that gunk. (I flush it down the loo, as the loo is next to the bath.... :p )

If this doesn't work, it is worth considering seeing how far you can get with the u-bend thing. Worst case scenario....any progress you make will only help the helpful male friend whose shoulder you cry on about your (possible) lack of progress. You have got a HMF, haven't you??? ;)

Why do they make u bends? Its like they make sinks to get blocked at the U bend.

A u bend allows there to be a water trap to seal the sink from air drifting up from a (possibly) stinky drain. It's made removeable because, as you say, it can get blocked.

  • On the bath drain hole, there is normally a screw in the centre. Undo this, this allows the drainage cover thing to come away. Then you have beter access with the curtain hook!

Talking about soda crystals, add a tablespoon to your bath. Veeeery soft water and less bath foam/gel needed.

OK, us savvy MSE members save money by having showers instead, but the odd bath as a treat is always welcome and well deserved!

Yes, I would agree with Queenie - soda crystals with boiling water.
Actually, I don't dissolve them beforehand, just pour them down the plug - or as near to "down" it as they will go, then pour the boiling water on and they dissolve as it is poured on them. I don't know which is the better method - that's just the way my mum did it!!!!
