Please help! Bank admits wrongful accusation of fraud!

Hi there, I really need help concerning a matter that happened last tuesday. 12/01/10. To cut a long story short, i was wrongly accused of fraud in my local abbey/santander branch. Both my accounts were closed (leaving me with no bank account) i was told of the suspect fraud in the public vicinity of the branch (not in a private room) and was told that i was no longer to bank with them. I was highly upset obviously. Later, on the phone...they admitted a serious error had occured on their part and they reinstated my 2 cards and put an amount of money into one of them as a good will gesture (i didnt ask them to or agree to do this...they informed me after they had done this) I will not touch the money and have written a letter to them this morning (finally feel up to it) I am emotionally fragile at the mo and am devastated about this. A solicitor has advised to write first of all but can anyone advise me of anything else i can do. I can send people a copy of the letter if they wish on request. Shall I contact the press? not sure what to do.
Thanks in advance
Natalie

  • They have apologised, put some money in your account and reinstated your accounts. What more do you want?

What exactly would you like ? Is the money a 20 quid goodwill token gesture or something more substantial ? I can believe it was a traumatic experience though.
I think if it happened to me, I would certainly be changing my bank and I would contact someone at the highest possible level, not just in your branch and let them know the appalling way you were treated.

I would suggest moving your account to another bank.

I would follow your solicitor's advice which, presumably, is to see what the bank's response to your letter is. That is shocking behaviour on the part of the bank.

Why must they have had reason? Its the bank in the wrong here not the OP. The bank has admitted this.

How much money do you want from them? What detriment have you been caused by this incident?

They could put a sign up in branch saying 'Natalie Clapp is not a fraud artist. We're sorry' - would this be sufficient?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Hold on, you haven't even checked how much they have given you as a gesture of goodwill? Something doesn't ring true here.

If it was me then I would close any accounts I have with them and move to somewhere that isn't owned by Santander.

I would also suggest that the member of staff who told you all this without taking you somewhere private receives some training to avoid anyone else being treated the way you were.
