Buckinghamshire BS will today a launch 6.25% regular saver:

CHILTERN GOLD MINE :
A one year fixed term fixed rate regular savings account with a minimum monthly investment of £50 (maximum £250) paying 6.25% on maturity.

12 consecutive payments required. Payments cannot be amended during the term and no extra payments are permitted. If a payment is missed, the rate becomes equivalent to the rate payable on the easy access account paid for the entire period. No earlier access permitted. New money to institution.

It may be of interest to some. It's a pity that they don't allow a higher monthly amount.

Here's a link: http://www.bucksbuildingsociety.co.uk/investments/chiltern_gold_mine.asp

There is a freephone number to contact them: 0800 652 6725

Details are scant at the moment. The link I provided has gone dead. Therefore I assume that they are adjusting the savings pages to show this new account. Wait a while and see what shows when the pages are reinstated.

Details are now showing on their website and I have adjusted the link in my first post to reflect this.
  • Are they a reliable, safe and secure institution? I know the money involved is easily covered by the FSA protection levels - but with relatively small institutions I'd be dealing with by post - I'd like to know what other posters experience with them is?
  • I think I meant FSCS didn't I ...

This could be what i'm after, i have a few questions if anyone can help though:

When they say they will pay the interest upon maturity does that mean the day your final payment goes in or at the end of that month? If i start on the 28th September this month (when i next get paid) when could i expect the interest to be paid to my bank?

Also after 12 months it puts your money into a regular savings account called easy access - can i presume that next year on 28th September i will have full access to my cash and could get it immediately?

I ask because i am in the process of moving all my £2260 debt onto the mbna platinum card (no fee - 1.9% interest fee) - i was thinking about paying the minimum off each month and putting away 1 twelfth the remainder of the balance, once a month into a savings account - therefore collecting the interest and then paying off the card balance just before the 1.9% offer goes. I applied and was accepted yesterday and can expect my card in a week or so - When i call to activate it i'll ask for the statement date to be the day before so it'll push it to the following month - for instance if i get it on the 10th Sept, i'll activate it and ask for statement date of the 9th meaning i'll have 12 months from 9th October (i believe) at 1.9% - if i have access to savings from 28th September 2010 then it'll give me over a week to pay off my credit card. Does this make sense? I need help on the dates basically, if there's not enough time then i'll just split my card debt by 12 and pay it off each month but it would be nice to earn interest on my payments if possible.

    Thanks for reading!
