When using energyhelpline how do you compare "dual fuel"?

Also do I need to change now as I heard it takes 6 weeks to change supplier or wait until August 31st when my cap ends?

    Thanks

    An extra complication!

I'm on Npower's ONE tariff. The tariff ends on July 31st 2009. They have sent me details of the new rates - I assume these are higher, but not yet checked.

However, they have ALSO sent me a letter explaining that I will receive a £00 annual discount on my anniversary date of 3rd September 2009.

So I can't really switch until after that date.

    Cheers,
    Don

  • I thought that this deal ran to 31/12/2010, not 2009. Is the cap ending table wrong, or am I?

We're on the Scottish Power fixed price energy online 2009, that is due to run out on 31st August. Had a look at energyswitch, and they reckon we'll be better off with EDF energy, which is fine, however I rang Scottish Power to check which tarif we'll be going on and the advisor "strongly recommended" not switching as Scottish Power are likely to be bringing out a new "fantastic deal" as soon as this tarif finishes. Now, is this rubbish and just their way of trying to make me stay? If I do as he says and leave it until my tarif runs out then check their deal, if they aren't great, then I'm stuck on their regular tarif for 6 weeks waiting to switch, aren't I?

Mousetail, you would be best getting out your paperwork they sent you in the beginning and checking when the cap ends - because frankly, there's so many different caps and tarriffs out there, it's a bit mindblowing. If you don't have the paperwork, just give them a call :D

Don, I can almost guarantee the new rates will be more expensive, in fact if they aren't, I will personally run naked through the local town centre singing Macarena....and trust me, no-one wants to see that!
Seriously though, these comparison websites compare what you will probably be paying, with what you could pay - so if you use this, and if you can make a saving, it will be going up. You can even do a separate comparison with your current capped spend against potential saving.
That discount, I'd guess it's a reduction in that month's bill - personally I wouldn't wait, but who knows

Sukey - I've just used the same site, and if you enter the same tarriff you're currently on for both gas and electric, it seems to recognise that it's a dual fuel. Let's face it, if it's the same tarriff, then it's got to be a duel fuel really.
There seems to be a tiny glitch in the website though, it might tell you that you've entered the wrong tarriff - just try again and it should work if this happens.

As for the waiting till August, I'm in the same boat (And I bet 00's of us on here are :p ). That website has an option to wait until the 31st before processing it, so I wouldn't mind betting many of these companies will apply the charge as soon as they receive notification you want to move (Cheeky huh). It will mean paying a bit more for a couple of weeks I guess whilst the change goes through, but hey - we will have the last laugh when the move goes through.

I'm sure someone with more idea will post soon though to clarify this.

My cheapest seems to be EDF, but to my disappointment, the comparision websites haven't got an agreement to move to this company, so I can't get a freebee, but hey - suppose we can call these companies direct to sort it.

Oh, this might be of help to some - I just called one of the companies you can't use Uswitch or whatever to move to, and they said that they would contact my present company within two weeks. This means chargearooney time

Sooooo, it means I just have to wait till very near end of August. Oh well

For anyone considering switching from Scottish Power to EDF, also note that:
    a. You can't go through a comparison website, only apply direct, so no cashback/freebies.
    b. They will contact Scottish Power in two weeks so you will have to pay the cancellation fee of £50 if you try and switch now
    c. They will be very pushy for you to give them your email address NOW even though you don't want to switch right now. Pushy to the extent of being quite rude actually. *sigh*

My paperwork avoids mention of the end date altogether - can't imagine why - but I found it lurking in a dark corner of the np website. It does run to end of 2010.

    exessex mum,
im in the same situation as you i dont see how SP can charge the cancellation fee,as im typing this im speaking to SP and they confirmed that although they will have been informed after 2 weeks it will still take 4 weeks after that for the change over so that will be mid sept at best maybe longer.
i think i may wait 1 more week just to be safe, what do you think?
