Got an email today from VM saying this year they are upping my 2MB broadband to 10MB. Surely I will end up paying more for this upgrade at some point in the future.

I got the same only mine came as a letter from Richard Branson (well it claimed to be from him). I don't mind if they upgrade it as long as they don't charge me. Mind you they keep trying to get me to upgrade my whole package which I refuse to do - I am still on the telewest starter package so my telly only costs £5.50 a month, broadband is £18 and the phone is £11 with a free voicemail that I never use. Mind, I can see why they want me to change but I don't want to.0

Virgin always find a way to make you pay more.
However, they do upgrade speeds from time to time to keep you up with technological advances. When we joined them, we had a 256k connection (seemed amazing back then!) and were subsequently upgraded to 512k, then 1mb, and now we're on 2mb. If they didn't upgrade from time to time, we'd still be on 256k now!
See how much a new customer is paying now for 10MB, its probably not much more than what you've been paying for 2MB. You probably won't get charged any more, we never have been for our speed increases. I'm hoping for a similar email myself now!Dan

If you went onto one of their new bundles it wold cost you less and you would go onto 10Mb now. BB L, TV M and Phone M = £14 + £11 line rental. In effect it's what you have now but with 10Mb BB.

i've always got the speed they say, virgin use their own fibre optic cables and deliver the speed they say, doesnt matter how far you are away, or at least it doesnt the same as using via a bt line. if your not getting the speed they say then get in touch with them and get it sorted.0

Virgin mainly provide in cable areas so the speed they say should be (give or take a little) the speed you get - BB by fibre is far faster than LLU and DS and IPstream because there is little/no degradation of the signal as it travels through the normal copper lines. The only problem with it is that fibreoptic cables are only run in high density population areas which only covers a very small proportional area of the UK sadly... so most of us are stuck with GOC (yes it's actually referred to as Good Old Copper...).
It's times like this you wish you lived in Denmark where 98% I think of the country is now covered by fibreoptic cables so they have a great internet service all through the country... Granted they pay a lot more for it too (think last time I checked the monthly line rental for BB was £50 over there but that was a year ago...) - however they do get what they pay for...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

What "Speed test" do u use to prove your getting 10mb?0

Its not like BT copper line its cable, you may indeed be able to get upto 10Meg However if Virgins Virtual paths are saturated from little boys gaming and downloading movies then its going to have an effect on the speeds for sure.
Normally you can chop off 1Meg straight away from Exchange device overheads, so im going to say upto 9Meg.
Try speedtest.net that sight seems fairly accurate, but you will need to do it at 4AM to see what speed you connection can achieve at full speed.0 -
Ok, so i wont get full speed at normal hours, which is what i ment.0
