Yes after my email from Branson the other day promising the upgrade today I received a letter saying the price would rise by £2. What is the normal price though? I have always been on one of these 6 month deals. They also say paper bills will be £1.25 extra. The annoying thing is that I am on e-billing and receive e-bills. However I still get paper bills despite telling them this a couple of times. Does this mean I will pay £1.25 more due to their incompetence?

If you are registered for ebilling then you should not be receiving paper bills... that should be looked at but no you shouldnt be charged for paper bills if this is definitely the case .. if you want to PM me..

My friend has Virgin package, which did cost £38 per month but recently went up to £52 per month after 12 months contract period was up. They rang and queried but Virgin said it was because they have been upgraded to 10meg broadband. They asked for this to be reduced back to 2meg but Virgin said they couldn't do this. They threatened to cancel and Virgin's reply was "ok when can we cancel for you?" There was nothing in the contract to say the price increased after 12 months but apparently this is why they can do it! Outrageous. Virgin know it will be too much hassle for them to get a BT line installed and change broadband provider etc. Any ideas?

Any offers would always be on a 12mth basis.. contract sent would not always state what offer anyone is on as there are so many different packages so standard contract with standard charges are usually sent but discount applied to any account would be confirmed on bill or by calling.

as for 2mb this is being phased out as most people are looking for a faster speed anyway...

At the moment subscribers with 2Mbps broadband pay around £10 a month, depending on their package.
I guess it's too late to get cheap 2Mb broadband with Virgin Media ??

Someone I know wants cheap broadband, I checked Virgin Media's website & noticed the 2Mb (M) package has disappeared.

Wondered what was going on, why it has disappeared, so I assume you can't buy this package anymore with them phasing it out.

Is that correct, you can't buy 2Mb broadband anymore ??

Yes, not available to new customers.

They have introduced a new "Small" tariff (to go with the M, L, XL & XXL), which is not available to new customers, and I assume exists to offer to customers as part of a retention package when they complain that they don't want to pay more for the upgrade to 10Mb.

However this new 2Mb tariff has different capping limits to the existing 2Mb service, and if you thought things were bad now, you have not seen anything yet.

The capping for the new "Small" tariff runs between 9am and 9pm in a single block (not split 10am to 3pm and 4pm to 9pm like the existing 2Mb service), with a maximum download across the whole period of 200MB and an upload of 100MB. If you exceed this you will be capped for 12 hours and your download speed reduced to 500k and upload to 128k.

This table also has the differences between the capping for the upgraded 10Mb service, and the existing 10Mb service.

That's a pity as some people might be happy with the new Small 2Mb tariff for basic internet access at cheaper price.

  • I have been with Ntl/Virgin for six years + and was paying £10 a month an offer which has just run out, when I phoned them the only deal they would give me is size S at £14 a month on a 12 month contract, and as I cannot afford any more I have had to go with that, my concern is that I have M.S and therefore use my computer is used a fair bit on things like email, banking and watching BBC i Player, as you are saying that the service is going to get worse and to put me right is watching BBC i Player classed as downloading? sorry to sound thick but any help would be welcome.

    Thanks billesniper.

Everything you do on the internet, whether it is reading email, viewing webpages or watching online TV is classed as downloading.

The new S service means your speed is slowed down earlier than what it is when on M and possibly for more hours.

    See: http://www.virginmedia.com/help/traffic-management.php
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
