I'd have to disagree. I'm supposed to be on 2MB, and every time I do the test I am at or very close to 2. Last night, I was running at about 2.2!
Same here, in just under 2 yrs hardly ever below 2mb, and I'm only ever on it at peak (evenings) times.

Well worth £6.37/mth (with e-billing) after I said I was off to O2.

Coincidentally, mine seemed fast last evening, ran test

According to discussion on CableForum they are putting their prices up on 1st May (by coincidence apparently, but before you get your "free" upgrade - M (old package) is apparently going up by £2 pcm.

Got an email today from VM saying this year they are upping my 2MB broadband to 10MB. Surely I will end up paying more for this upgrade at some point in the future.

Hi Friend, That has to be good news as I'm on 2MB too. I haven't received a letter or email though... do you know when it will take effect?

as I have posted before on another thread.. some people are assuming it is another free upgrade as was the 4mb to 10mb previously.. not the case and you will be charged £2 more per month.

Its being rolled out from may until around september area by area...

Yes after my email from Branson the other day promising the upgrade today I received a letter saying the price would rise by £2. What is the normal price though? I have always been on one of these 6 month deals. They also say paper bills will be £1.25 extra. The annoying thing is that I am on e-billing and receive e-bills. However I still get paper bills despite telling them this a couple of times. Does this mean I will pay £1.25 more due to their incompetence?

Its the usual "Up To 10MB", youl never get 10!

Being cable unless you are in an over-utilized area you'll get extremely close to the 10Mbit, so close it's neither here nor there.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

At the moment subscribers with 2Mbps broadband pay around £10 a month, depending on their package.
They will continue to pay this rate after the upgrade, less than the £14 a month paid by existing 10Mbps customers who also have a Virgin phone line.
However, the new 10Mbps customers will have to pay the higher rate to receive the online protection package PCguard, which blocks nuisances such as viruses and pop-ups.

  • My friend has Virgin package, which did cost £38 per month but recently went up to £52 per month after 12 months contract period was up. They rang and queried but Virgin said it was because they have been upgraded to 10meg broadband. They asked for this to be reduced back to 2meg but Virgin said they couldn't do this. They threatened to cancel and Virgin's reply was "ok when can we cancel for you?" There was nothing in the contract to say the price increased after 12 months but apparently this is why they can do it! Outrageous. Virgin know it will be too much hassle for them to get a BT line installed and change broadband provider etc. Any ideas?

IIRC the contract is only for 12 months and doesn't lock you in after that, and it's fairly normal for any service to increase in price after a year - although not normally by that amount.
It's also fairly standard for them to offer introductory pricing, which may by the end of the initial contract be out of date due to package changes.

It might be worth your friend ringing up and querying the packages, as in many cases it's cheaper to get a new "package" deal with more services than it is to have a mix of lower options (for example if he/she took a package and added a service a year ago it's quite possible that by taking a new combined package it'll save money).

For example we were paying about £95 a month for XL TV, 3x STB's, XL internet, and basic phone - they then introduced the VIP pack which meant for £85 we got XL TV with movies/sports, V+ and normal STB, full phone package, and then added another STB for a fiver, saving about £2 + most call costs, whilst giving us better options etc.

The discounts you get with the packages are very odd at times, iirc for example you can take out the XXL internet on it's own and it costs more than if you take out a package with the XXL internet and a phone.

Actually, we have had that speed on several occasions when downloading files :D .

I am still on the telewest starter package so my telly only costs £5.50 a month

We used to be on that package (phone line with free basic TV originally offered by Telewest, before they started charging £5.50 for it) and after looking up the new rates, I phoned VM last summer to 'downgrade' to the free TV (size M) that is once again offered together with the phone line rental.
