Stupid bloody router part 2

Options
Its me again

I have finally got my router set up, wired on the PC and wireless on the lappy.

Thing is I am no getting a really weak signal unless I am right next to it, I can move 4ft away in the same room and it goes to a "low signal" and often cuts out. I have tried changing channels, not tried all of them but done it about 4-5 times.

I have this router

Is there anything I can buy or do to improve the signal, I did a search but couldn't find anything

Thanking you

Oh I am on XP on both comps

  • try raising the router off the ground for a better signal.

I take it the laptop is still in "line of sight" to the router?

I have put it as high as I can, although limited because of lengh of ethernet cable and yes the laptop is in line with it, I even got desperate and tried sitting parallel to the router

If you are using wires and not wireless then there should not be a problem with signal. Your computer is probably trying to use wireless instead of wired.

Edit: sorry, I see that you have one wired and one not, I thought you were only using wires :o

Have a look see if there are anymore wireless networks in your location. Via the networks window..

Did you change the SSID ?

Well seems there is a firmware upgrade - do via the wire connection. More info here

What about the laptop - have you used that wirelessly before ? Are updated drivers or firmware available for wireless card ?

Have a look at the "Status" of the connection - what speed are you getting ? What protocol does it negotiate to ?

  • Have you tried changing the channel that the router is using ? It could be that someone else has one on a frequency that is interfering with the default.

i have never used it wirelessly, the laptop itself is only 2 months old so I can't see it needing updating.

It seems to be behaving itself for now, the speed at the mo is stated as 18.0mbps.

As someone else has said you need to change the frequency that the wireless part of the router work at, the default is 11 so move it to another number and keep changing it untill the area of coverage improves.

The general problem with wireless is it uses the 2.4ghz of frequencies which is an unlicences waveband that is used by loads of other household gadgets etc .... including bluetooth devices, dect phones, video senders, some wireless keyboards, some car alarms, wireless doorbells etc .... add this together in a localised area and you could have a wireless "traffic jam" .... best to shift to another frequency and see what that does !!

    ;)

As I said, I have already tried loads of different frequencies, and still no good.

Seems to be ok at the mo but I'm sure it will cut sooner or later
