Friend of mine bought a laptop woth built in wireless receiver and had same problem, couldnt get a signal unless he was sat right next to it. He bought a USB wireless dongle (expensive one) and now it works fine. Looks like they just put a cheapo wireless adapter in the laptop.

Is your laptop powering down your wireless network card - set the power setting to be no save. ( Control Panel etc )

Does the speed go back up to 18mbs ? and is this still at 4ft away ?

Firmware upgrades are more likely in the early life of a product. What model laptop do you have ?

Are you near any phone masts ?

Where is the function to no save. I went to power options and clicked all the tabs but couldn't see it

Dont know the model of the lappy, all I know is that its by ECS elite groups.

    I am about 600ft from a mast.

Err did that from memory - set the power saving so it does no power saving ! Always on

Have a look at the driver for your wireless card via Configure button via right click over the wirelss link and select properties for the link look at the advanced tab - turn off the power saving there as well.

600ft do you like living there ?

Depending what menus you have set - I prefer classic.

But if you have the "my computer" icon on your desktop right click over that - select manage. Click the Device manager >> network adapters >>select your wireless adapter right adapter icon and select properties and work through the tabs >. different drivers will have differnt tab names. Remove any power management.

Try that . next will be to try the auto update for that wireless card - you will see it when you right click over it for props page.

Not sure what site you could not open .... and 600 m is better..

I meant I couldn't get on this site, cleared files and cookies and then was able to get on.

here is a link to the ECS download site http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Downloads/Category_Download.aspx?Categoryid=3&MenuID=37&LanID=0 Not sure of your model

See if there are any updates for your system

Also have you looked at Windows update - via the custon update option on the actual site.. let MS checked for critical updates -then - over on the left you will see hardware updates - under the non critical updates - get all the updates that are there if any!

You may need to think about popping round to a friend with a wireless router - to check ur laptop.....
