As the owner of an ex-racer who was minutes from being killed when I got him (perfectly healthy, beautiful young dog - just lacked the instinct to chase) - I wish people would wake up to the cruelty of this so-called 'entertainment'.

Didn't mean to offend or cause controversy, just thought it was worth sharing.

I actually have a rescue dog myself and wouldn't support anything that I knew was cruel, in my experience of these things everything looks OK, at least on the surface.

I'm not defending the activity itself as I don't claim to have an indepth knowledge of it, but thought I should defend myself as I seem to have caused some offence.

Sorry GemmaE, I wasn't intending that at you personally at all.

On the surface it's meant to look fine. But since a greyhound is too old to race at 4 and their life expectancy can be up to 12-14 years old where do you think they all go when they can't race anymore? There are nowhere near enough homes in the UK and Ireland to accommodate the thousands of ex-racers who become surplus to requirements every year and most dog rescues are brimming with unwanted dogs as it is already. What do you think happens to them?

And as for cruelty, I've seen a dumped greyhound with its ears cut off so it can't be traced back to its owner by the ear tattoo it was registered by, so I can assure you that it definitely goes on.

Anyway this is a grabbit board and not the place to debate this.
  • People don't whinge about the sweat shop conditions Nike trainers are made in if someone posts a link to some cheap ones do they
  • I do get fed up of seeing posts like this.
All people have different preferences and opinions about things.
Now, the OP posted a good deal, which no doubt will appeal to many people, myself included. She shouldnt have had to feel that she should apologise for posting a bargain night out...
I have taken up this offer and will have a great night there, as i have done many times before. So many thanks OP :)
The people it doesnt appeal to didnt have to even read the board as the title gave away the subject matter.
You are entitled to your opinion, but it doesnt mean you have to try and make people feel guilty about what they like.
It was the same with the £1 chicken breasts from ASDA last week, people dont need the guilt trip that comes with a few of the posts on this board, people on that thread just didnt need to comment, and its exactly the same with this one...

Wish some people would just keep their unneccessary opinions/comments to themselves and everyone would be happier...

    For example:

I would say thats a particulary unneccessary and aggressive post.

The thread is about bargains after all, so just keep it to that for goodness sakes....

    Here we go again!

Dog racing is legal and enjoyed by thousands, the 1p deal is a good deal.

If you want to go, go and if you dont, dont!

This is a moneysaving "grabbit" forum not an animal rights forum.

So we're just supposed to ignore the moral aspect of the choices we make?

There is loads of evidence that behind the only-slightly-sleazy surface of the dog racing industry there lies a tradition of vile cruelty and crime. It is perfectly reasonable for us to point this out so people can make an informed decision.
