Making cards - Ideas for a card craft beginner (part 2)

Options
I was hoping someone on here could give me some advice. I'd like to try making cards but don't have any idea where to start. I've looked in a few craft shops and found the choice overwhelming.
So.. am I best buying a kit to start with that has all the bits in, or if its better to buy the bits separately, what do I need ?
Also.. is it worth buying any of the magazines ? I've seen a few but they're all sealed so its difficult to know if they're worth the money, and one is about £8 !
Thanks for any help, sorry its a bit long.

*BOARD GUIDE INSERT - this thread is now a continuation of this original thread on making cards, it may be a good idea to look there first for advice*

Hi, it all depends on how many cards you want to make really. I like to buy the bits and bobs and make up my own design. What kind of budget were you thinking off?

There are some nice kits around this year will try and find a link to some.

I have seen some in the craft shops with all the embellishments, paper, card etc for about £14.99 or £10.99. These come in a clear plastic bag with handles.

You could try stamping, with a stamp and ink pad and then colourwash them? Some of the christmas foam stamps are very good and for about a tenner normally coming with an ink pad ad you just supply the card. I think studio cards alsohave kits.

What ever you decide to do - card making is very addictive - so be warned.

I know what you mean there is so much choice out there. To start off you'll need some cardstock, the papermill shop is good for this as you can fill a box (choosing your own colours) for 6.00 I think.
Next you'll need some adhesive, some people use pritstick or pva glue, I use double sided tape for sticking the paper and card, and then use glue dots for sticking buttons and flowers etc on. Next you'll need the embellishments to stick on the card, a lot of people start off using peel off, which cost about 99p pack, but a lot of online shops stock them for much cheaper than this. Or you could recycle old cards, print images off on your computer, there's no end to the stuff you can use for the centrepiece of your card.
Obviously you'll need some card blanks and envelopes, packs of these tend to be expensive, so I just fold my own card and use that instead.
I don't tend to buy the magazines myself, but I know a lot of people love the lets make cards magazine (the one that's about 8.00), and would probably recommend this one to you as a beginner.
There is a fab card thread on this board, with pics of cards that we have made, links to online shops, and loads of fab people who will be happy to answer all of your questions:

LOL that's where it ALLLLL began, and I think you'll find many people have improved their skills and certainly felt braver at trying new skills, throughout the length of the thread ;)

The other thread will always be on this board for all to see, at any point in time, with the link to it in this thread AND still in the sticky for crafts, so anyone can find - it won't disappear as it obviously makes sense for it to be linked to the new thread for continuity, for regulars AND newbies

In relation to the name, it can certainly be called that if I edit the title of this thread (and I'm sure Skiergirl wouldn't mind that)..................however I wouldn't do that straight away as that's not very fair to Skiergirl right now and not everbody is settled in yet ;)

The other thread has got very long for an image heavy thread, and not all people have high speed connections and all that techie malarky etc etc, and it's going to get even busier with all the new Christmas cards everyone will be making. It also makes it quite difficult for newbie card makers to trawl through it all to find what they need easily, which has been the case just recently, so it seemed the right time to construct a new thread for it.

In addition to that, we are asked to close long threads and start others so that they don't put so much strain on the site's servers.

If you do not agree with this decision you are of course welcome to report it to abuse.

I have made another one which I am very happy about but cannot  share as it is for polly from her husband

Skiergirl - Agatha Misty is right, it is a totally addictive hobby. It starts with a few bits in a box and before you know it you are filling 6+ boxes, swamping the front room (or demanding a craft room) and everytime you go shopping anywhere you see or go looking for things you can use. It can also be quite costly especially if there is a sale on (which ladies on the thread always share). A magazine is definately a good place to start and after that there are the pound shops, home bargins and any sale that is on. Good luck and I look forward to seeing your creations.
