New building very very noisy at night

Apologies if this is in the wrong place.

A bit of history...http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bristol/7634938.stm

This is Cabot Circus, its on my doorstep :(

I look at my kitchen window and the spaceship "car park" is in my face.

My problem is sleep at night or lack of, since the car park was built the lights have been left on 24/7 light pollution being a big problem, but not as big as shining in my bedroom all night.

Have already spoken to the new owners who could only see the pound signs in front of their eyes.

But the new Cabot circus is so noisy, and at night when everyone leaves the lovely new restaurants and new cinema and trapes back to the car park that is noisy too.

I have started a diary of the night disruption, but the problem is, if the owners of the car park are not interested, and environmental health have been involved since it started to be built and allowed the builders to break all the rules of working out of the hours they promised they would stick to, what hope do i have of making my voice heard, i'm even part of the neighbourhood community, we have complained as a big voice, been on tv and the local newspaper, and we seem to be the ones that loose out and basically 'tough live with it' attiude... just look at what we have given you..

I'm tired, i have work to go and do, i want my sleep.. any advice

  • Oh I can really sympathise with you- we used to have a large bakery near us that went on to 24/7 production and it was awful at night. We were fortunate because Environmental Health were very helpful. They set up recording equipment at our bedroom window and the result of this was that the bakery had to install special silencers to cut down the noise level. Have Environmental Health even offered to record the level of the noise for you and your neighbours? Regarding the light shining into your room, you could get blackout lining for your curtains. This is very effective. Sounds like you've tried to get this problem resolved from every angle possible- would contacting your MP be the next step, maybe?

Could you not get the car park owners to pay for blackout blinds (very effective!) and a big industrial pot of ear plugs for you?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I had presumed you were the owner... Personally I would just move. How long is your contract for? If the owners won't invest in a blackout blind, then they'll struggle to perhaps get any more tenants!

The local Bristol papers have had 100s of articles about the Cabor circus. I think that they're working on the principle that it's the most amazing thing to happen, ever. Rather like the woman who was reported to have broken into tears when seeing how large the B&Q store was in Gloucester when it opened. A cathedral to consumerism.

well i had to take today off work because i was so tired.

spent the day trying to get some sleep

but the builders outside who are building houses right outside the car park (they don't have back windows or back gardens because they are inches away from the car park)

Then someone decided to rev their motorbike for 30 mins.

finally got some sleep at 4 ish and not long woke up.

But obviously now it's effecting my job if i have to take a day off to get some sleep.

well i have a message for the owners of the cabot circus / car park, i hope you choke on your profits whilst us locals have sleep deprivation

I'm not sure what that's got to do with anything, but AFAIK the position the OP has described is not St Pauls.

I must have walked past the property trying to find my way in the first day it was opened, and did feel a great deal of sympathy for those who live so close! They may have finished the shops, but they certainly haven't finished the roads!

    Anyway,

    MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to the House Buying / Renting board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

I am not sure what the landlord's responsibility is in terms of keeping noise out, and it is difficult because the local press coverage does seem very enthusiastic at the moment. I'm wondering how today's rain has affected things ...

    Keep badgering Environmental Health?

Its just the other side of M32 from St Pauls.

I've since found a slight blunder and i wonder if those that know planning permission can advise.

We have had meetings with the new owners of the car park who stated that the car park will close 30 minutes after the last venue has closed which would be the cinema at 3.am .
yet...... on all advertising it says its open 23/7

    http://www.cabotcircus.com/website/CentreFacilities.aspx?currentSectionId=6145f5cc-31db-4eab-8d7b-64faba70a1b1&contentInstanceId=5845cb6b-db1f-45be-bc02-694bbf10ea6e

It shouldn't be a problem getting a copy of the minutes of the meeting that this was said, but where do i go from here, basically i want to complain and make my little voice heard, I want to sleep at night and right now that's being disturbed because they lied to us, and the noise and light is keeping me awake.

I've been advised that i would need to see the original planning permission to see what they stated was the opening hours.

I want to find out who has been telling us tenants fibs, the council or the owners

mind you I can't seem to find the name of the owners of the car park atm, any help would be so grateful

    Thanks desperate to sleep
