I totally agree with you, it takes me ages to find a decent pack and whilst doing this people just pick up a pack without looking at it!0

Totally agree - and I get so hacked off that they are putting large labels so that you cant have a good look at what you are buying - whether it be a higher fat volume on the meat or that horrible green glow in the dark look -I now go to the butchers and buy exactly what I need knowing it is fresh and that if I need say six sausages thas all I am buying rather than the eight pack IYKWIMEvery days a School day!0

Ground Beef Color - Red versus Gray-Purple Meat
The bright red color of ground beef is often used by consumers as a selection factor when purchasing hamburger, but a dark gray-purple color may not necessarily be a bad thing.
All warm-blooded animals contain a pigment called myoglobin in meat tissues. This pigment is normally a dark grayish-purple but when it comes in contact with oxygen, it becomes oxymyoglobin and reacts by turning a deep red color. Meats that are vacuum-packed have not been exposed to oxygen long enough to turn red.
It is for that eye-pleasing coloration that most fresh ground beef sold in clear packages at the market is packaged using a clear film that is oxygen permeable. The oxygen goes through the film and allows the meat to turn that pretty red color we associate with fresh beef. This is why it is not recommended to freeze meat in store packaging.
Coloring can also indicate spoilage. If your package of ground beef is grayish all the way through and does not turn red when exposed to air for fifteen minutes or so, it is most likely spoiled. Usually your nose will tell you right off the bat, as spoiled ground beef will smell sour. It will also feel tacky to the touch. Don't take any chances with spoiled meat. When in doubt, toss it out.TOP MONEYSAVING TIP
Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!0 -
Can't say I've ever seen meat that's not fit for consumption
If you're really concerned, reporting to Trading Standards is what I'd do.
I'll move it to the Consumer Vent Board, where you'll get more responses:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
So stop buying yourmeat in the supermarket then. That's what we've done - we now have the reassurance of knowing the provenance of the meat we eat - yes it might sometimes be a touch more expensive but we've addressed that by eating less of it, but of a better quality.
Farms shops, Farmers markets, good independant butchers. You will have one of these, if not more than one, locally.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

My FIL was ran a butchers van for nearly 40 years and always leaves his sausages to hang for a day or two. They are not limp like the ones full of pink sh1te from the Supermarket and by jove they don't half bang when fried in lard.0
