Changes to eBay Shops

Removal of Shop Inventory Format

eBay will be retiring the Shop Inventory format and replacing it with Buy It Now. We will also be extending the listing duration available with Buy It Now to 30 days or Good 'Til Cancelled.
You can sign up for 1 of 3 tiers of Shops: Basic, Featured or Anchor.

New criteria to sign up for a Shop

If you wish to subscribe to an eBay Shop, you will need to meet the following requirements from 24th September 2008:
Basic Shop:
  • Have a minimum Feedback score of 10, or
  • Be PayPal Verified
Basic Shop: Anchor Shop: Upgrading, downgrading and cancelling your Shop

Note: Shop subscriptions are for a minumum 30-day period.
Upgrading

When upgrading your Shop to a higher tier, the new subscription level is effective immediately and the higher subscription fee will apply from the day you sign up.
Downgrading

If you wish to downgrade your Shop, please note the following:
  • Shops subscriptions are for a minimum 30-day period. If you downgrade within this period, you will be billed for the entire 30 days. If you downgrade after 30 days, the subscription that you pay in respect of the post-30 day period will be pro-rated, and any overpayment will be reflected in a later invoice.
  • All Good 'Til Cancelled Buy It Now listings will renew at the new Shop tier's fee rate immediately.
Cancelling

If you wish to cancel your Shop, please note the following:
  • Shops subscriptions are for a minimum 30-day period, and you will be billed for the entire 30 days if you cancel within this period. Subscriptions cancelled after the 30-day period will be pro-rated over the days of the month, and any overpayment will be reflected in a later invoice.
  • All of your current Buy It Now listings will end automatically.
  • Feature fees you have incurred will not be reimbursed.
How Detailed Seller Ratings could affect you

eBay will be taking Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs) into greater consideration when determining the following:
  • Featured First - a new feature which will allow users to enhance the visibility of their items in search results
  • Requirements to open an eBay Shop
  • Ranking in search results
The table below shows the minimum 12-month average DSR scores you have to maintain to qualify for the various features.
Minimum DSR score Featured First 4.4 or above Featured Shop 4.4 or above Anchor Shop 4.6 or above
Important: Failure to maintain these requirements will affect your Shops subscription. If you fail to maintain the requisite DSR level, you could be downgraded to a lower Shop tier with a different fee structure.
Shops subscriptions are for a minimum 30-day period. If you are downgraded within this period, you will be billed for the entire 30 days. If you have been downgraded after 30 days, the subscription that you pay in respect of the post-30 day period will be pro-rated, and any overpayment will be reflected in a later invoice.

To put it bluntly I would run, which is probably what ebay want you to do.
Buy for value not cost.

    This is the interesting bit, it is exactly what we had htought would happen to encourage those pro sellers to get their registration correct;

I keep reading these changes and I am still confused as I think I've got thehang of them, but then sometimes I read them again and see something different.

Currently I understand it to mean that BIN auctions are going up considerably but basic auction listings are staying the same?

However they appear to contradict themselves because the same announcement page says both
Note: There are no changes to Insertion fees for Auction listings. Please see the eBay Fees page for the existing Insertion fees
    and
From 24th September, we're revising fees for Auction and Buy It Now listings
Also, they keep saying 'excluding media' but don't specifically say that the 5p listing fee for media under 99p will remain

I think i need yet another read of it.

I've just had a quick read. Seems to be getting expensive for selling items under £50 with a 9.9% charge.

It is essentially a total shafting for the individual seller trying to shift a few things from their attic. Those £1 bargains? Think again. Listing the item will now cost 40p, ebay take another 9.9% and if you've been duped in the past by PayPal into an account upgrade, don't forget their slice too. This exercise sounds like a ruthless exercise in getting rid of small sellers and turning eBay into an online mall of shops.

It is clear that's the direction they've been moving in over the last couple of years, so we shouldn't be surprised. However, if that's their business model, then they could be killing the goose with her golden egg. Prices will rise, people will desert the site. Small sellers will walk away. What are folks' recommendations for the best alternatives sites?
  • Its getting ridiculous - are they trying to do themselves out of work??

Even worse than I thought, HappyBunny! But long term this is good news - ebay will eat itself through pure greed! The more sellers and shops (and buyers too) that walk away, the better. The trouble is that at the moment they have (almost) a monopoly, with both the customer base and the sheer number of sellers. It will take a long time to build up a competitor.
  • I have a box of stuff cleared from my loft that I was planning to sell in the run up to Christmas, guess I will be listing it in the next few weeks. There are other alternatives lets hope they will now get more custom. Many of the companies that sell on ebay like Freemans and Schuh charge high postage so I don't tend to buy from them. I prefer the individual sellers that are clearing out so will follow them. Ebid could do better if it improved the search. I cannot find stuff the way I can on ebay.

    ?

Auctions appear to be unchanged, it is only BINs that will be 40p (and now up for 30 days).

Paypal is a requirement and realistically you can't sell without a premier account, we are not duped into having one, we either use ebay and accept the paypal charge or we use another site

These changes are mainly going to affect the smaller seller with a basic shop there is no way they can posisbly continue with their current model. The middling size shops seem to be split 50/50 as to whether they will be better off or worse off, and looking at the ebay boards it seems to depend on how much of a turnover they have. Bigger shops seem to be very happy about the changes..good for them

For seller slike me that use a mix of BINs and auctions it seems that as long as I avoid BINs on small items and stick mainly to aucitons I may be better off as the gallery is free, so I save the 15p per listing.

However, next time I read it I will probably interpret it differently again!

For the basic punter, the main implications are:

    1. Free gallery (although it's been free for months now, as a 'promotion' anyway!)
    2. Increased FVFs
    3. A difference in FVFs for BIN listings vs standard auction listings

Wonder how quickly someone posts that they have been ripped off by ebay stealing higher FVFs for a second chance offer (duplicate item) compared to the original item they sold for more money under an auction?
