Fresh Root Ginger

I bought a bargain bag of ginger for 10p today. There's stacks and I don't know what to do with it, can anyone help?
Husband suggested ginger beer : has anyone here made it? Other thoughts are ginger cake. I've only used it for curries before and that doesn't take much. I've made gingerbread men before with the dried stuff but the kids didn't like them (although they'll eat the shop bought ones).
It seemed like such a good idea at the time!

You can freeze it if you're not sure what to do with it right now, and use it directly from the freezer to grate or slice :)

All those things... and... you can freeze it with no ill effects too, so it'll be ready for when you want it. It also grates well from frozen so you don't need to defrost any of your chucks if the recipe will cope with grated.

There are recipes involving ginger in the Old Style Recipe Collection and the Slow Cooker Collection.

You can find these in my signature any time you see it or...

..you can use the Indexed Collections link in the Blue Bar at the top of every page which looks something like this:-

if you have a bit that looks nice & fresh, you can put it into a pot of moist compost & if you're lucky, it'll grow into a lovely houseplant with long spikey leaves :)
I've heard it has pretty blue flowers, but can't vouch for that as I left mine in the porch in a cold snap & it died

you can grow lemongrass in a similar manner. put a stalk in a glass of water till it gets roots, then pot up. apparently it was a popular Victorian houseplant

presumably you'd eventually get more ginger & lemongrass, but I'm not good with houseplants & mine have never survived long enough
  • If you scroll through all the Health INFORMATION about Ginger from Worlds Healthiest foods you will come to some useful suggestions.

Like other have suggested I would bung it in the freezer and use it grated while frozen, in curries etc however there are some good recipes HERE if the freezer is full.

    Edit: Recipe for Ginger Tea

-Ginger tea: Drink several cups a day. Tea is available in prepackaged bags or can be prepared by steeping 1/2 teaspoon of grated ginger root in 8 ounces of very hot water for five to ten minutes. A cup of tea, when steeped for this amount of time, can contain about 250 mg of ginger.

When might it be useful to know how to make/use ginger tea see ginger appears to be a fairly low-risk and effective treatment for nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy for INFORMATION. For medical advice see your doctor.

Some Indian friends of mine made me some Ginger Tea - not sure how you make it properly but I remember they boiled milk in a saucepan with teabags and fresh ginger (quite a bit of milk I seem to remember)- it was quite a refreshing hot drink.

I had some sitting in my fridge the other day and couldnt decide what to do with it either.

Figured as the Japanese eat it pickled with sushi (which is yumy) I ended up slicing little bits off and nibbling on it - it's nice provided you know you will like it!

I break it into small pieces and peel it before freezing. This makes it easier to deal with when used straight from the freezer. A few minutes preparing before freezing saves time later.
