As a second PC I think you'd find it hard to beat one of the Dell £229 machine, but if you want to do any intensive gaming and need a decent upgrade path go for the £329 one. But even if you chose not to you should upgrade your memory to AT LEAST 512MB.You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0

The upgrade path of the £229 and the £329 should be the same - apart from the £329 has a 3.4Ghz processor as opposed to 3.0Ghz (aside from gaming possibly does it make THAT much difference really?). You could argue you could choose the make of HD and amount of RAM for the extra £100. Anyway - both are a great buy...0 -
thanks for the input i feel more confident that i could go ahead and get one now - but before i take the plunge aside from getting a new monitor would i have to buy any other softwear that we presently use i.e excel, powerpoint and all that or does that come with the OS - i have looked but can't find whats included in XP home - sorry for being such a numptyi'm living in a parallel universe0

XP Home is just the Operating System nothing more. The PC you're looking at comes with Works 7 which is it's effectively a stripped down version of Microsoft Office, missing out several of the big features but covering the basic tasks of word processing, spreadsheets, database and calendar functions. Where it falls down slightly is when it needs to interact with other applications. Works saves files in its own way which have trouble being imported elsewhere (text blatantly copied from the web :shhh: ). If you use Excel, Powerpoint you could always download Open Office which is free and interacts well with Microsoft Office products. This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!

If dabs are shipping the 5150 instead of the 5100.Is the 5150 i nice upgrade over the 5100(which i bought last year)
Thanks0 -
Searcher2 wrote:The hard drive in the 5150 I bought from Dabs.com for £229.99 + del (which I assume is the same as the BT offering) is a Maxtor. It is quieter than my Hitachi which I thought was quiet. If you want to look up the exact spec of my machine on the Dell website the tag number is JLN032J - tells you the DVD type etc.
EDIT : It seems that this gets better and better for me. Someone over at RPoints has told me how to check the warranty from Dell online using this link
http://support.euro.dell.com/support/topics/topic.aspx/emea/shared/support/my_systems_info/en/details?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs
If you put my service tag in it says 991 days of DELL CFI with complete care left from 05/02/2006 to 04/02/2009 !!! Not sure what CFI is. You can get teh system config from that link too.
Nice one.Useful information0 -

I really can't see much/any difference between the 5100 and the 5150. I certainly wouldn't buy it as an upgrade from the 5100 (which I have too). I bought the dabs machine as a present for someone - so I was chuffed to get the current model and not the old one. There must be a slight difference as in the memory checker at https://www.crucial.com it comes up with different spec memory for the 5100 as from the 5150. The same question was asked on the Dell forum but no-one came up with anything significant.0 -
CFI is Custom Factory Integration ...AKA built to order...and the complete care package includes I think accidental damage...but don't quote me on this one.
yep I was right From Dell:
Scope of Services:

During the term of this Agreement and subject to the limitations in this Agreement, we will repair or replace the Computer Device as necessary to correct any damage to the Computer Device which occurs during the usual and customary usage of the Computer Device because:
• An electrical surge damages the Computer Device’s internal circuitry, or
• You accidentally drop the Computer Device (in the case of Notebooks and/or Peripherals) or the Computer Device is otherwise accidentally damaged from handling including damage to:
• The keyboard if you spill liquid.
• The LCD/monitor cracks or shatters in extreme temperatures.
If we repair your Computer Device, you understand and agree that we may replace original parts with new or used parts from the original manufacturer, or a different one. Replacement parts will be functionally equivalent to the original parts. In our discretion, we may designate an affiliated company or contract with a third party to complete repairs on the Computer Device.
If we decide that it is necessary to replace the Computer Device rather than repair it, you will receive a Computer Device equivalent to or better than the Computer Device you originally purchased from us, as determined by us in our sole and reasonable discretion.

The £229.99 and £329.99 5100s are now out of stock on the BT site. Still available if you want to pay the extra £20 to get them with Works 8.0, and the entry level 1100s are also still available for £129.99.You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0
