To disable Web Shield and/or Link Scanner (Safe Search and Safe Surf) memory resident shield component, open AVG Control Panel User Interface (AVGTay), and then select LinkScanner to uncheck Enable AVG Seach-Shield (need web browser restart) and Enable AVG Active Surf-Shield to disable all interception during web browsing. Or select Web Shield to uncheck the Enable Web Shield to disable checks on downloads. Click Save changes when done. Also disable the AVG SAfe Search plug-in in Firefox and add-on in IE browser too.

I've installed AVG version 8.0 and dont like it. Does anyone know where I can download version 7.5 from? I cant seem to find it on the official AVG website either.

You can download 7.5 from here.

AVG 8 is free, but the pop-up will take you to the paid-for version.
http://free.grisoft.com will take you to the free V8.
or a more direct link is http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe#tba2

Don't know of any way to stop the pop-up on V7.5

a bit out of date but as of last year but Avira always did a lot better

or for a very detailed review of many free and paid for AV products

Thanks woby_tide this was the kind of info that I was looking for, as you have stated it is a year out of date but it still shows that Avira has a really high detection rate, so i think I will keep my Avira for the time being, but I wonder how Avira's detection rate compares today especially with the all new AVG 8, I guess we will have to wait and see.

I'd only had it on for a short time, but firefox was jerky, probably only a fraction of a second, but annoying.
you think such a big company as AVG which until now has offered a very light on resources antivirus, would be aware that their new antivirus might put a lot of people off as it seems to slow down your system even intermitently, however I dont want to slag AVG off as I have been very happy with them untill now

I have Avira and it is good. I also recommend the free Comodo anti virus(go to their website for downloads). Both of these programmes do not slow your machine down as much as others with no appreciable loss of protection.

As regards browsers I try Opera 9.27 and have found my browsing speed is increased 2 or 3 times. This offsets any slowing down caused by antivirus/santi-spyware prgrammes

I've been using AVG 7.5 for a while now, since I got the pro version for free and I'm reluctant to upgrade to a lesser product. The pop up is doing my head in so I'm going to have to do something about that to keep my sanity!

AVG7.5 IMO. I tried v8 and it was a mess (see the v8 thread).

I've been using AVG for several years now.

I have tried AVAST, but have found AVG better from testing..

Does Avir actively scan e-mails? I thought that was an issue with it...

it seems that quite a few people are having a problem with AVG 8 from the comments here, but is AVG not just in beta testing just now and all those problems will soon be fixed ??, if not I will miss AVG, I was considering temporally changing to AVAST, the only reason I didn't is that I was told that AVAST had quite a low detection rate (don't blame me its only what I was told), as for Avira e-mail scanning I use yahoo for my e-mails and that has a built in virus scanner, I think that yahoo use a norton scanner
