My mum has one of these "hidden" accounts apparently, she calls it her happy fund so that in a pinch, something nice can be done without any record of explanation needed. It seems to work wonders for her so I think that maybe all women should have one
You never know when the foundation mousse is gonna jump off the shelf and leap in to your basket after all - and you should always be prepared for such unforseen emergencies :rotfl:

Its easy to spend the money on a card, £82 is a lot of cash to hand over for someone down the street - does he feel he has to show he's got money?
(don't mean that in a nasty way!)0 -
What's done is done, like you said, you can't take the gift back so you are stuck with being £83 down.
What I would be really annoyed with is the fact that he just spent that kind of money without consulting you or letting you know the bank is £83 down.
£83 is a LOT of money to spend on a gift when you don't really know the people, I would have thought £20-£30 max would have been sufficient to buy a nice gift.
The other thing I would be annoyed about is that he didn't tell you he had spent that cash, you could have gone OD if you had needed to buy something/pay a bill etc
Me and my OH have a joint account, but we always tell each other what we have spent so that the other doesn't think there is more available and so run the risk of being OD.
I'd be feeling pretty low and miffed too, that he thought nothing of spending 80 odd quid on a present for a wedding present for someone he hardly knew, when all you got was a box of chocs for your birthday.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
My Mum always told me to have an account Mr HQ never knew about - he doesn't know about a couple of them. It reins him in a bit because he thinks theres less money than there is, if we ever needed to use it its there but he would spend it given half a chance.0

Oh my gosh, women like to be debt free too! This is a revelation to me! True your OH gift is over the top.
But I have the opposite problem, my OH loves to shop, clothes mostly and that next catalogue gets read like a Dan Brown thriller! Any tips to hold her back??
The clothes are one problem, then we have to spend extra on wardrobes-and I spend hours putting them together!
I'm doing all I can, paying off her credit cards, cancelling store cards etc....0 -

No, he's just really generous - if I'd asked for an extravagant birthday present he'd have given it to me without a second thought. But that's just it - there is no second thought.
I'm a bit worried now about the comment about him not telling me things, I wonder if it's because I've been so gung ho about moneysaving that he spends the money and then feels guilty. Next step is to get him to feel guilty first so he doesn't spend it :rotfl
Starting to calm down a bit now.0 -

I'm a woman....and I want to be debt free
If I was you, I would not pay off her credit cards, by doing that you are saying "it is ok to spend this money"
Hide the Next catalogue or throw it away (as I have recently done with my fiances)0 -
Get all the clothes out of the wardrobe and pile them on the living room floor - only then will she see exactly how much stuff she has and how much money is there.
See if theres anything she really won't use that can go on eBay or a boot sale, but be prepared to get what you can not anywhere near what you paid.
Hope that helps. Or superglue her purse shut!!0 -

I think this must be a man thing. My OH came home yesterday really pleased with himself and said he'd ordered some new speakers/amp etc for his car from someone at work (he works in a garage) as they were a bargain at only £200! Needless to say he's gone to work this morning with a face like thunder to cancel his 'order'!0 -
Glad to hear he's a nice guy snoozer - MR HQ is generous as well, thats why I try and let him think we have no money!!!!!!!!0
