maybe - when you ask for you MAC, ask if you can downgrade the account to Pay As You Go - but you will have to dial in every 90 days, to keep it active

Would love to keep it but it ends with btopenworld.com will i lose it?

    Hi There,

Unfortunately if you move away from BT Yahoo you will lose your email address. You can of course try for the same address with your new ISP but it will end in their name and not BT Yahoo.

PlusNet dont treat you very well, IMHO, if you are an existing customer. I have been with them about 14 months and pay £29.99. They now offer the same service to new customers at £21.99. To cancel my existing contract I need to give 30 days notice and pay a fee. Getting information out off them is like pulling hen's teeth...it took about 6 emails to get this information and even then did not specify how much the fee would be. Ringing their customer service help line takes for ever and costs a forture (cheaper now thx to Martin's new access nos for premium rate nos) I dont consider that good customer service. I would like to change to one of the cheaper providers recommended here but dont want to be left without access. Can anyone suggest how best to go about this pls.

Plusnet have 2 offers at £14.99 per month. Why not switch to one of them if you want to save money?
Also your information on contacting their helpline is totally wrong. You go through to them on a low cost 0845 number, not a premium one.

For those who don't want to get tied in a contract ( and those who don't have a landline) , its worth looking into 'now' - wireless broadband. I suggested it to a colleague after extensive search ( she is lucky to live in an area where it is available), and she has been quite impressed by their service. The customer service is also very helpful- they even call to check if everything is working properly, and offer 30 day money back guarantee. The downside is that the modem !!! receiver needs to be placed near a window or where the best signal reception is...

Well I went with Madasafish and am I happy  ?

Put order in early Friday 24/2/6 after midnight Thursday.
Got 2 emails back same day, one confirmed order, other confirming activation date 4/3/6 and modem will be here in a few days.

Sometime Monday 27/2 my phone line went dead

10am Tuesday 28/2 at home - modem router arrived from Madasafish via Parcelforce/RM.
Reported line fault to BT via 151 on a payphone - BT's fully automated service confirmed fault on line, allowed me to forward landline calls to mobile ( no cost to me or caller ) I also got them to send text updates on fault progress. System said engineer would be out Wed AM if needed and I would be paid a pound a day, if fault not fixed, to cover mobile costs . Got first text as i left phone box 13:01. Fault investigation underway.

Next text @ 15:14 The fault had been fixed  and it had.

Unpacked the router/modem ... followed the setup sheet and used logon details from the second email .... I was on broadband for the first time at home.   on 28/2/5 @ approx 16:00 - Five days after putting in my order http://www.madasafish.com/cheaper/

BTW If anybody else has the Vovager 240 router - there is now firmware upgrade http://www.voyager.bt.com/240/downloads.htm You need to run this file first to expand it - and then follow the instructions here http://www.voyager.bt.com/faqs/ethernet_products/240/windowsxp/advanced_features/upgrade_firmware.htm

So am i happy with Martin's :money: recommendation for first timers ... not half ... Cheers  Martin

Ps all my missed calls were picked up by the 1571 service as my line did not ring as dead !

GreenNotM obviously had a great experience (other than the line going down for a short while). Just a warning to others though.... for first-time broadband users, provisioning of the telephone line for broadband is down to British Telecom and out of the hands of your chosen ISP. They tell customers to allow up to 10 days for this to happen and it typically happens in 5-8 days. May luck be on your side!!

I am constantly reading posts from people who want to change their ISP but don't want to change their email address. THE ANSWER is to get yourself a free email address (or2) from Google or Yahoo (not BTyahoo!). You can sign up to Yahoo's e-mail on their website, but if you would like a free gmail address (Google) which is fantastic, send me a Private Message with your current email address and I will send you an invite. This is the only way to do it at present. (That goes for anyone else who would like one as well !!). Gmail has over 2GB of storage, is downloaded/uploaded via Outlook Express in just the same
way as your ISP email address. It means you will NEVER have to change again, no matter how many times you change your ISP.

I have just called Nildram to get a mac and they have downed me to broadband to go. Still 2mb, but the limit is 2.5 gb per month. I dont use more than 2 on average. cost 15.99. Not the best price i know, but i have just shaved £120 off the cost of my access and will see no restrictions in my service.

    Well Chuffed
    Cheers

Most ISPs on their websites have a facility where you can input your telephone number and check what speed of broadband you are likely to expect.

In practice this only checks the exchange you are on and not the individual phone number. There is a check somewhere that I have seen that will look at a specific number. Does anyone know what this is?

    Hi
Can anyone recommend 'Eclypse' Broadband and is it true that we only need monthly contracts therefore making it easy to change if we are not satisfied. I'm with BT at the moment and paying moe than £26 per month for a very poor slow downloads with my e-mails and basic web searches. ADSL say that my service line is below standard. I live in a country village (no cable lines) and am quite a long way from the exchange. I'm a light user and very confused with the different packages. 'Eclipse has been recommended to me rather than 'madasafish' I would appreciate your advice.
