Ooh, thanks for reminding me! My friends have been telling me to get AdAware for a while, it's one of those things I've never gotten round to doing.0 -

I run avg and spybot, but used superantispyware after reading this and it had picked up a few things spybot missed.
er, are these things firewalls? (waits for techies to finish laughter)0 -

:rotfl: :rotfl: (just kidding). If you don't know then the most intelligent thing is to ask. They are anti spyware (or anti malware) programs. They search and try and prevent/get rid of spyware or adware.
Firewalls control the network ports on your pc and try and stop any hacking or suspicious network activity. Windows XP service packs 2 has its own inbuilt firewall which isn't all that sufficient. Zonealarm and Comodo are examples of firewalls. You may have a hardware firewall built into your internet router (if you have one) and this gives another level of security but you should have a software firewall as well. But only one software firewall. Having more than one will cause conflicts in the same way you should only have one antivirus app. As for the other antispyware/malware apps, it is best to have more than one."She is quite the oddball. I use AVG for viruses, and Spybot Search and Destroy for spyware. They're both free to download, and really good, so long as you keep up with updates.. I also only browse with Firefox, since it blocks most pop-ups.
neither of these i can get for free, AVG wants money straight up spybot lets me download it find out all the probelms then wants me to sign up for $19.95 package
im in dire need of antivirus or spirewire software,im not very technically so please excuse me
ive always had norton and avast on my computer but i got sent a nasty viruse via msn and i just cant get rid of it and it is slowly destroying everything

Avast for anti-virus. It seems to pick up Trojans that AVG doesn't.
Zone Alarm free, coupled with a NAT firewall in my router.
Plus the odd scan with Spybot.0 -
cheers superscaper, hope I cheered you up, lol.
Got a router, but should use Zonealarm as well then?
The last poster thinks avast is better than avg, should I change? Also, mum is running norton but no spyware or firewall. She doesn't do much, mostly just emails friends.0 -

I personally use Comodo for a firewall but everyone has their own preferences. Same with Antivirus, I personally don't see much difference between AVG and Avast, (even Antivir is better at detection but let down by no email scanning), all much of muchness really. For AV myself I found it worth paying for NOD32.
As for your mum, it may be worth taking off Norton and putting on all the free alternatives mentioned, not many people think much of Norton and it doesn't even fare well against the free alternatives."She is quite the oddball. Thanks for that, I was shocked when she told me she had bought Norton - on the advice of a a (so-called) tech minded relative! I will deff get her some of the freebies mentioned - Norton must have taken up more than half a week's pension! Off to download Comodo now0
