This is an interesting thread..I only came across it whilst doing a search for 'virgin broadband' on the forums. (I was looking to see if anyone had a dropped broadband connection today as my cousin can't get online at all...)
Anyway, I just wanted to add that I'm also one of those with appalling speeds, it's like wading through treacle some evenings. I just did the speed test and I have 307 kbs down and 248 kbs up. My average is 575 kbs and my best is 843 kbs, so not exactly lightening fast. I have also phoned to be told that it must be my problem as they have a good speed in my area, and because I'm not techie I've always believed them.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Hi Soolin, I may have a solution for anybody with crap download speeds. try using a proxy from colchester as they and belfast give you the best download speeds at present, virgin will never give you this info as they like us all having crap speeds. Heres what to do
1)Go to Internet Options
2)Click Connection tab
3)Click LAN settings
4)Put a tick in the proxy server box then click advanced
5)In the http box enter colc-cache-3.server.ntli.net
6)In the port box enter 8080
7)Click ok on all tabs until you are back to desktop and then re-run speedtest.
(If the net doesnt work after just turn proxy off by repeating the first few steps and untick the proxy server box)0 -
Thank you I'll give that a try tomorrow when the house is quiet and I can concentrate on what I'm doing!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I've been on 20 meg for a while and the most download speeds I was getting was 2500kbps - 3000kbps I have now used the same settings as I put in the post above have run a speed test this morning which was 18754kbps and just now which is a peak time which was 14874kbps so its 6 times better than what I was getting.0

They deny CAPPING, the term used is Throttling, although they deny this too (even though it is on the website)0

There is a network problem at the min and it is apparently being worked on

The main thing is not to trust them speed sites at all . I use them quite regularly and the speed they give for me rarely seems to match the actual download speeds I get when I download a file (MP3 , movie or whatever)0 -
i'm ex ntl and been unable to use a proxy here for the last few weeks.i HAD heard that they were getting rid a while back.if i put a proxy in i get a message with pics on how to take OUT the proxy!! ''We've noticed that the internet software you're using needs a little fine-tuning before you can start browsing again.'' then at the end it says ''You're ready to start making the most of our improved service!''
muppets.i've not been into the site related bit of MSE recently and for me this site has been SO slow most of the time even in an afternoon.just wondered is anybody else getting the same who's on virgin? quite often i give up trying to browse cos it's too slow even in firefox.0 -

Hey I dont know how you worked it out, but it works, excellent, I cant say I even know what it does, but I risked it, and hey presto, boosted me to 4meg. What exactly does it do?:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

It is connecting you onto colchester which has not got a high usage so you are more likley to get a higher connection speed for downlodas etc. I was told to do this by a V.M employee (a friend of mine) so thought I would share the joy !!0 -

Try using the colchester or the belfast proxys, max speed and you dont get the message when you load internet explorer/firefox it goes straight to your home page0
