Day 9 – Up early this morning as lots to do today. Didn’t bother with breakfast as totally full from Gran Luxe cafe the night before. Took the monorail to Caesars/Flamingo and decided we wanted to see the Flamingo/Animal habitat at this casino! Went looking for it and found lots of flamingos, swans, ducks and fish in the habitat and took lots of pictures. Headed out of here and went down to Bills Gamblin Hall to find the Tix for Tonight stand to get tickets for “The Price is Right” show that afternoon at Bally’s. We queued for about 30mins to get cheap tickets to the show. Total price $70. We then went to Bally’s Casino where Price is Right was on and registered our details. This is where we got our name badges etc. From here we walked on to the Miracle Mile shops at Planet Hollywood and did quite a bit of shopping. We bought watches and wallets from Fossil. Claire bought a dress from Guess for Mark and Emma’s wedding and we then went on an endless search for matching shoes! That was fruitless. We also grabbed lunch here at the Earl of Sandwich cafe and Claire had a Mozzarella and Basil Ciabatta and I had a club sandwich with Turkey and Ham and cheese etc. We also had a cookie here too. We then went on more shoe searching and then it was 2pm so we had to go and get in for the Price is Right at Bally’s. Once in the theatre and sat down, the show started and it was of course incredibly American! Lots of crowd whooping and cheering and clapping! Very amusing. We didn’t get called up on stage sadly and most of the people who did didn’t win anything big. The show went on for about 1hr 45mins. Once finished we headed back to the MGM on the monorail to get ourselves in the swimming pool again! Went in the Lazy River at the MGM that was strangely quiet at 7pm and was then told half way round that it was closed! So we moved over to the Producers Pool that was the only one open and did a bit of swimming etc. Finished up and went back to our room, showered and changed before heading out towards Bally’s Casino again to get ready for the show. Before doing that though, we had been recommended to play on a slot machine called Gold Fish. Had a play on that and chucked about $30 in the machine and had quite a good few games on it but won nothing much. We also headed in to Panda Express (Chinese takeout) but decided against a big feed and Richard just had a hot dog and Claire just had 2 spring rolls. We then finally headed on down to Bally’s. Got in to Jubilee for the 10:30pm show which was amazing. The amount of set changes etc and dancing was really really worthwhile the cheap tickets we got for it. Once we left there we headed back on the monorail back to the MGM Grand and stopped off at the takeout place and grabbed a slice of pizza and chips each to take back to our room to feast on! Once done we slept until the morning!

Day 10 – Started early again as didn’t really know what to do for breakfast, were we hungry or not...decided to take a wander in to the casino and played the Goldfish Slots again and won $37! But we had put in $30! Then we wandered around for somewhere for breakfast for ages, before ending up in New York New York casino over the road from MGM. Here we couldn’t find much either so we headed over the road the food court and Richard had a Wendy’s breakfast Egg, Cheese and Sausage muffin and Claire had an Egg and Cheese subway! We then headed back to our room at MGM to checkout. Checked out in the main lobby and then called our car out from Valet. Tipped the driver and headed out on to the open road in Las Vegas heading for Palm Springs! Got ourselves out of Vegas on the main interstate and dropped in to a place called Primm on the state border between Nevada and California. This is a big shopping outlet centre with similar shops to UK. Richard bought 3 pairs of trousers and some socks for $50. We then left there heading through the Mojave Desert. This was a turn off road that looked dubious on the map but actually it was a good road. We went straight through the middle of the Mojave Desert and stopped off at the Visitors Centre in the middle. We looked round and we ate at the cafe there. We were the only ones in and we talked to the owner who had only reopened 8 weeks ago after the cafe closed 15 years ago! Claire had a cream cheese bagel and Richard had a fresh salad sandwich, $13 plus tip. The temp was rising here and we were swiftly heading towards 107oF! Hot! The hottest we had been all holiday surprisingly. Left the visitors centre and headed down towards Palm Springs and Claire took over some of the driving. We got in to Palm Springs and found the Holiday Inn Express that we were staying at. Booked in, it was very nice and new. The receptionist was very helpful, Eva, and she pointed out where we could go to grab some dinner etc. We got changed and had a dip in the pool at about 7pm as the sun came down over Palm Springs and the mountains. We were the only one in the pool which was outside with lots of bugs swimming around in it!! After this we got changed and headed out towards River Walk where Eva had suggested we go. Found the place about 5 miles from the hotel and parked up. It was really really busy. It was like a retail outlet centre outside with a river running down the middle. We choose PF Changs a Chinese to eat at, having a few cocktails at the bar and then opting for a 3 course Chinese dinner! We had soup to start with, spring rolls, Richard had Honey Shrimps and Claire Mixed Veg and then 2 mini deserts afterwards. We were so full after this! It was really good though for only $55! We also met a couple sitting next to us who started talking to us since they heard the English accent. We then headed back to our hotel, and crashed out!

Day 11 – Got up at the holiday inn express and headed down for some breakfast even though we were so full! Lovely continental breakfast available and had a few bits from it and took a few bits with us. Checked out and headed towards the famous Palm Springs cable car. Found this, by now the temp was heading in to the 90’s! Got the cable car up the side of the mountains and 2.5miles up in the state park at the top! Simple amazing views and even some snow. We took a couple of the hikes around the desert and state park at the top before coming down on the cable car. The cable car is unique in the western hemisphere as it also rotates 360degrees as it goes up and down the mountain. A very odd sensation. It was also a lot cooler at the top as we were 8000ft up! It was approx 60oF! A good 30oF difference! Once down we got in the car and headed out towards San Diego. Found another Shopping Outlet centre along the way and stopped off and Richard bought 2 pairs of trainers and Claire had a bag bought for her from Fossil! We also had some lunch, consisting of Pasta and Salad and Richard had a Stromboli as well. We left here, still in the baking heat approx 95oF. As we headed south on the freeways, approx 70miles the temperature dropped and dropped. It dropped right down to 65oF. We grabbed some more fuel mid way, with car taking another $30 of gas. We navigated our way in to San Diego, sometimes hairy on the 6-7 lane freeways! We soon found our Hilton Home Suite hotel which was great. The room had a great kitchen and big lounge with it. We got changed and headed out to San Diego Old Town. By this time it was about 8pm so we wandered around Old Town which is full of Mexican Bizarres! Full of little homemade items and small shops full of glassware and everything very Mexican! We found an outside place to eat, although by this time it was approx 60oF and quite cool! We both had Vegetable Fajitas and wine and Mexican beer. After this we were both full and tired so headed back to the hotel to grab another night’s sleep! It had been another long day!

Day 12 – We woke early today at about 8:30 as we knew we had a long day at Sea World. Richard has started to develop a cold and felt pretty rotten which isn’t great. We got up and went down to the hotel lobby to pick up the complimentary breakfast! Although we were pretty much full from the Mexican the night before! We grabbed some cinnamon rolls; we both split a massive waffle with strawberry and cream. Once finished we headed back to our room before getting in the car and travelling to Sea World. This wasn’t far from the hotel, about 15 minutes. Sea World was huge! We grabbed the map and attractions booklet and looked at what shows and attractions we wanted to see at what time so we could see everything. We went to see Otters feeding, Dolphins before seeing a Dolphin show were we sat on the 5th row, in the soak zone! And guess what! We got very wet!!! Great! Show was great and very entertaining and we then decided we would like to pay extra for a personal dolphin show and touch. So we paid $90 and booked in for an afternoon session with the dolphins. We then headed over to the Sea Lions show and watched that which was also very entertaining. We grabbed a spot of lunch, with a veggie wrap that we both shared and also a cookie which was the size of Richard’s head! It was huge! Hehe! We then saw the Shamu Whale show! This simply was amazing, those creatures are massive! The show was really good, it was typically American with lots of whooping and clapping of course and an odd bit at the beginning where they honoured their army troops where they all had to stand up! Very American!
We then headed to our Dolphin session which was really really good. We got to go to a private area where we met two of the dolphins, got to touch them and feed them fish. Claire wasn’t overly happy in sticking her hand in fish guts etc but she had a go! We got to give them hand signals to do thing and hold their head whilst we stroked them. It was really worth the money but only short at about 25minutes.
We then headed on round to the Sharks, Mantree, Polar Bears, Penguins and these were all really good. Did a motion ride, called Artic Trip or something which was OK as well. We also went up a tower that spins slowly as it goes up about 500ft above the park and San Diego. We got lots of pictures on this. Finally we tried out one of the last rides, which was like a log flume and rollercoaster in one. Can’t remember the name of it, but we got pretty wet on it after a long queue! We finished off in the Park after 10hrs by checking out the pictures taken of us whilst we were touching the dolphins etc and we purchased one of them with us both in it. Headed home out the park and back to the hotel to get changed and showered again.
We thought we would take a drive out that evening to the Gas Lamp quarter. So we got in the car and headed out along the sea front and past the airport and finally made it in to a very busy area called the Gas Lamp Quarter. We couldn’t find anywhere to park and the whole place was really really busy. I suppose it was like the night life district of the city. We headed back to the hotel as we knew there were some restaurants in front of the hotel. Once we got there we parked up and looked in to a Thai restaurant. The place was pretty quiet for a Sunday night (It was also mothering Sunday in USA) and Claire ordered a stir fry Tofu dish and I ordered a Calamari Noodles dish with mixed veg! Both were really delicious and reasonable priced at about $35. We walked back to our hotel suite and headed to bed about 10pm as both were really tired after a long day at Sea World.

Day 13 – Got up fairly early again about 8:30am and headed to the hotel lobby for breakfast again, just had some cinnamon rolls and apple juice as still full from the Thai. We checked out the hotel and headed up the coast towards Los Angeles. Richard wasn’t looking forward to the drive round LA due to the warnings we had had from people about traffic and driving etc. We headed directly up the coastal road which took us along the sea fronts most of the way through little beach towns which were full of surfers. The temperature wasn’t warm again, the fog was down most of the way and it was hitting 66oF most of the time. We stopped off at a little place called San Clemetes where we drove down to the Pier and parked up. We walked along the wooden pier with people fishing and playing ball on it. There were surfers in the water too but it wasn’t very warm! We then headed up the hill and parked up by the boutique shops and had a look around. We bought some doggy thank you cards (Because they look liked Henry!) here and then headed back out on the coast road round to Laguna Beach and Newport Beach. We arrived in Laguna Beach about 1pm and we went round and round the place before finding a place to park. It was expensive at $4 for 2 hours. We had a look around the boutique shops again before stopping in a nice cafe for a sandwich. Richard had fresh shrimp and avocado and Claire had cheese and avocado, both were lovely but pricey at $30. We then headed on to a place called Newport Beach. We turned off the road and went to a little Island called Balboa Island which again had little quaint and boutique shops (They seem to like them in LA!) and we had a wander around, the air was warmer here at 70oF. We found a boutique pet shop where we purchased a toy for Henry to chew on when we get home! Hopefully it was last in his chops!! We got back in the car and headed on the freeways and interstate highways to get ourselves across LA in rush hour! (4pm) It wasn’t as bad as we thought, the roads where busy, the 8 lane highways were interesting to navigate but it was good to have the Sat Nav on board and Claire did a great job map reading also. We got across town in about 1hr and came in to Hollywood through the hills! We could see the Hilton hotel we were staying at as it’s on the hill and about 26 stories high! We got parked up and checked in to the hotel (parking is expensive here at $17 a day!) and got to our room. By now Richard’s cold was now worse (we had picked up some medical bits earlier in the day) and he was tired from driving so he took a sleep for an hour or 2. Claire went and found out information from the hotel desk on how to get to City Walk and Universal Studios. Seemingly they were only 5 mins outside the hotel door! After Richard had woken up and we had showered and got ready it was 8:30pm. We headed out the hotel and walked across to Universal Studios and City Walk. City Walk is basically an outdoor place with shops and restaurants and loads of bright neon lights inc a cinema also. It’s just outside the front door of Universal Studios. We stopped off at a place called Wolfgang Pucks where Claire had a Spinach and Goats Cheese Pizza and Richard had a fresh Organic burger and Blue Moon Beer! It was all very tasty and the lady serving us (we were the only one in the restaurant!) was English so we got chatting to her, she had moved from Stains 10 years ago to the East Coast with her family and then she moved over to LA for a few months of living. Finished off our meal and had a quick look around the shops which were closing. We did stop in Magnet Max and grabbed $20 of magnets for the fridge at home!!! We walked back to our hotel and turned in for the night at 10:30pm pretty tired again from a busy long day!

Day 14 – We got up early again today at about 8am, heading downstairs to the free continental breakfast on offer. This was nice, with fresh fruit, pastries, cereal and bagels which we had plenty of! We then headed back to our room to get ready for heading out on the sightseeing buses! This picked us up at 10:05am at the front of the hotel and for $30 each you could do several interchangeable routes round LA stopping at various points of interest as you wanted. Kind of hop on and hop off idea. Grabbed the bus from the front of the hotel and headed in to central Hollywood. Saw the Hollywood sign for the first time on the start of the trip as well. We stopped and changed buses on to the red route outside the Chinese Theatre and where the stars go round the pavements. The red route took us through all sorts of famous places like Sunset Boulevard, Rodeo Drive, Beverley Hills. We stopped and got off at Beverley Hills Shopping Centre and did some more shopping! Claire bought some more dresses and tops and after 2hrs we headed outside for the bus as it came round again (Came every 40mins) we saw someone else waiting but then spotted the Old Navy store and Richard decided he wanted some more clothes. We headed over to the store and grabbed some more clothes for Richard. As we headed back to the bus stop we noticed the other people waiting had gone, so we had to wait about 20mins for another bus. Once on the bus again we continued through famous land marks including LA Police Department. The bus returned us to the Chinese Theatre where we were able to board a different bus line which took us Downtown in LA. This was really the normal working area, rather than upmarket and kitsch. We got off at a Mexican market and boarded the next bus line that took us round down town. It was 3pm by this time. We went round the downtown area, seeing all the LA newspaper offices, Town Hall and the fashion district amongst others. This bus returned us to the Mexican market where we got on and we then jumped on the final bus to take us back towards Hollywood and back to the Hilton Hotel at Universal we were staying at. We got back to our room and Richard decided he wanted to go to the pool. Having gone down to the pool (outdoor!) at 7pm, the temperature outside was about 68oF outside and the pool was far too cold to get in. So we just went in to the Jacuzzi for 30mins and warmed up. This was a lot nicer, although getting out wasn’t quite so nice! We got back to our room, showered and got ready for dinner. We walked out the hotel again and up the hill to City Walk again and wandered around for a little while, checking all the restaurants out for Vegetarian meals! Eventually stopping on Hard Rock Cafe. Here we sat and had 4 cocktails, Claire had a Veggie Burger and Richard had a Swiss Cheese, Mushroom and Onion Angus Steak Burger. Total cost inc tip $80. Probably one of the more expensive meals of the trip! We were that stuffed we walked the 10minute walk back to the hotel, got the lift to the room and watched a bit of telly before going to sleep at about 11pm.

Day 15 – Our last sightseeing day of the holiday! Started about 8:30am where we went down to the continental breakfast again in the hotel. Richard having fruit and doughnuts and pastries, Claire having a bagel and pastry. We headed back to our room before walking up the hill again towards Universal Studios entrance (just outside City Walk) and got our tickets in to the Park! We also had to go and get our Front of Line passes, enabling us to go to the front of the line for all rides and shows and giving us special back stage passes for some of the shows. We headed straight for the Universal Studios tour. This was on one of the trolley buses which took us down the hill and in to the studio areas. We went through loads of different effects, such as driving through a lake which the water parted to let us through. Inside a subway tunnel with fire and water and a subway tram crashing right next to us! All pretty amazing stuff! We also saw stuff from some of the movies filmed there like Jurassic Park and Back to the Future amongst others. We then headed on to the new Simpsons ride which was pretty cool. Then we checked in to a few shows, seeing the Terminator 2 show which was pretty crazy, afterwards we got to meet the actors in it and see how the special effects were created. The actors in it are actually part of a group that rotate but they also work on other shows that are filmed at the studios like Heroes etc. Quite bizarre! We saw another show called Waterworld which was mind blowing, a massive outdoor set with a big lake with special affects galore! Tons of exploding things, and people on speedboats and even a free flying small aeroplane that is catapulted in to the set! Again we got a stay being afterwards and met some of the actors who showed us how some of the effects were done and let us ask them questions. We then headed on over to the Pet Show. This was a show with lots of pets doing silly things. Some of the pets were out of films, and one of the dogs was in the movie “hotel for Dogs” which Claire has just watched on the Plane (as I write this up) and spotted said dog! We also got back stage for this and met 2 of the animals in the show including the dog mentioned above and a large hawk. Pictures etc were taken with them. Then we headed over to the Shrek 4d show, this was like a movie with 4d glasses on, which was ok. We then headed to the lower lot in the park, down about 4 escalators on the other side of the hill and headed in to a show called “special effects” here we got to learn about how some of the special effects for certain movies was done, we were taken through 3 different sets showing different sets of effects. We then quickly went in to the “backdraft” show which was illustrating how fire was used in the film “Backdraft” After a few montages we got through to the presentation where we stood in a studio on a metal ledge where in front of us the whole place was set alight and burnt and exploded! It was really really hot as it was literally only a few metres away from us! Really enjoyed this part. We only had about 30mins left before we had to get back to the hotel and do the online check in for British Airways flight home to make sure we got some decent seats again. So we ran on to the Mummy Ride which was quite bizarre, just like an indoor rollercoaster that sent you forward at a fast speed and then backwards along the same track, but you ended up in a different place to you started! Quite bizarre! From there we went on to the Jurassic Park ride, which in affect was a Log Flume, it was certainly good fun and we didn’t get to wet. We rushed back up to the upper lot and out the park and headed to the hotel where we logged on and got our online check in and the best seats in economy booked again (the pair of seats at the back) We also checked in at the hotel concierge and decided we didn’t want to go to City Walk for dinner again but instead go for an Indian. We were suggested one in Beverley Hills which we passed on, given that price would have been astronomical but instead were told about the Bollywood Cafe! This was at the bottom of the hill from the hotel and about a 15min walk. We went back to our room and showered and freshened up and walked to the Bollywood! It was quite a trek down the hill as the sun came down at about 8pm and we certainly weren’t looking forward to the steep walk back up but found the Bollywood with ease and it was brilliant! It was just like an Indian back home but with a LA twist! We sat down and had poppadoms, Chicken Tikka Masala, Vegetable Masala, Cheese Nans and Rice, Beer and Wine before we were completely stuffed once again! Total cost inc tip $60. We talked to our waiter in the restaurant who had lived in LA for 2 years after coming over from Bangladesh, he had family in Britain and couldn’t wait to visit, but can’t until he had got his USA passport which he could apply for after 3 years. He was very nice and told us some more about his country and family. We left the Bollywood and headed back up the steep hill to the hotel, retiring to bed to watch TV and fall asleep, what a cracking last sightseeing day!

Day 16 – Travel home day! Not good, we woke up about 8:30, got showered and had our continental breakfast (ate same as the day before), packed up and really left a bit late, our plane left LAX at 12:15 to San Francisco. We checked out the hotel and headed down to the parking lot to the car. By this time it was about 10:15. We got on the roads and immediately met traffic and it was a slow journey over to the airport. We eventually found the Dollar (Car Rental) drop off and the car was checked over. We were slightly worried as the car appeared to have a minor scrap along the front bumper and wing that we don’t think was there when we picked it up, any way the guy OK’ed the car and we picked up the shuttle bus in to LAX airport. By this time it was 11:35. We got checked in and then joined the queue for security. We were slightly worried as because we were only 45mins to our departure the bags were tagged as Late Check-in and therefore couldn’t be guaranteed on the flight!! Anyhow got through security, ran to gate 7 and luckily we had about 10mins to spare! A bit touch and go as usual! Got on the Southwest internal flight to San Francisco which was full! Got the last 2 seats at the back of the place with some mega huge guy next to me so I was squashed in for 1hr! Not nice! Landed at San Francisco and went to see if our baggage made it! It did! Grabbed that headed towards International Check in. Checked in at BA and asked about upgrades, $300 each for Economy Plus! No thanks!! Then went through security and had a bite to eat, having a massive burger for Richard and Claire had a vegetable Panini. Did some duty free shopping and grabbed some perfume and aftershave and headed on to the plane home! And this is where I write from now, 37,000ft up and 2500miles to go (4.5hrs) to Heathrow. Then we grab our flight to Manchester again and our friend Ryan will pick us up and take us back home! Three things that we really have missed or will miss: One, the holiday, we could do it all again backwards, the sites we have seen, the people we met has been out of this world! The most amazing time. Secondly, Pay day! It’s been expensive, very expensive, we are spent out perfectly and have a small bill to pay when we get home so it will be nice to get pay day! And Thirdly, our Big Black Labrador Henry! We can’t wait to get back and see him! There has not been a day goes past where he hasn’t been mentioned and he has been sorely missed! It will be nice to get out and walk him and loose some of this weight we have gained from all that food! So that’s it, until next time! In the words of the yanks, “have a nice day!”

    Oops, I did it again............

Just booked to go back in September!!! Wooo hooo!!

I had already booked Paris for 11 nights and the Carriage House for 2 nights while I was monitoring flight prices. The flights I was looking at had to be booked before tomorrow so I've bit the bullet.

£450 each isn't cheap, but it's the best I could do from Aberdeen with flight times that suited. Flying with United via LAX out and SFO back.

So now I am officially going back and looking for offers on hotels from 19 September onwards so if anyone spots any, please post.

So far I've seen the Excalibur for $36 mid week, but not sure I want to be that far south.

Looks like the meet is on,I better start practising:beer::beer:
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Great report, Rich - thanks for sharing! The font is still too small for my old, blind eyes but copying and pasting into Word did the trick for me.

Sounds like you did a lot and had a great time!

I was a bit confused about walking from Venetian to Bally's to take the monorail when Harrahs/Imperial Palace is between them - but assume you were wandering anyway. :)

    Thanks again for posting!
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Ummmmmmmmmmmm not sure about the walking....not sure, we were no doubt wandering around like stupid idiots! :):) We tend to do that..

Now last time we took the Deuce, but this time the monorail, im not sure which one was best, probably the deuce...BUT the monorail got us in to seeing more Casinos and stuff as it drops you at the back......so that was a big bonus! I enjoyed seeing them all........even though we don't really gamble (!) (Sort of ;))

Cracking Holiday though and if people have time to read that, I hope it goes a little way to giving them ideas on what they could do on the West Coast.

As previously said, happy to talk to anyone in private about our trip or photos etc! Will post a few though later!

    Hey again,

I just wandered if any MSE'ers had any experience of trying the $20 trick at Circus Circus. There seems to be lots of reviews on whether the trick worked or not at other hotels, but only a small selection for Circus Circus - and they are not too recent at that.

    Thanks in advance.

I'd be surprised if you get any first-hand accounts here, I'm afraid...and I suspect that the reason there's not a lot of reports on CC is that a) a lot of people who stay there booked on a package and didn't do much research on the trip themselves, so will not have any idea that the $20 trick exists and b) a lot of people who stay there do so because it comes up as the cheapest on a lot of 3rd party hotel booking sites - so again, they probably haven't done much research and probably don't know it exists and c) a lot of people who book CC are looking for the cheapest deal and if they do know about the $20 trick, they probably don't think it's worth it to spend the extra money to try for an upgrade -they're happy with what they've got.

I mean no offense or disrespect to anyone who falls into any of those categories at all...it's just why I don't think you'll find much about upgrading at CC.

It cannot hurt to ask, of course.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
