i go to Aldi maybe once a month, and i pick up a handful of things - literally, as they have no baskets.
i can recommend the sliced continental cheese (my favourite emmentaler), it is about half the price of big super/m. the chocolate pudding with cream on is gorgeous, i used to have it in germany, much better than english ones.
their cereal is good, plus beans, nuts, etc.
i find it boring to shop there but it has good quality food, at very good prices.
i bought a brand name duvet there on a 'special' two years ago. it was less than half price, and i have never seen it anywhere else so reduced since.
on the negative side, they have a lot of things missing like fresh soya, or quorn/veggie products. so, i wouldn't go regularly.

All these cheapo shops have a stinky whiff in them, I walk straight back out again holding my nose
Why walk in them in the first place? You have obviously made your mind up before entering.
Personally have never found one 'cheapo' shop Aldi, Lidl, Netto etc to be 'stinky'. Maybe you need a shower it could be you?
I found this with Lidl, for example, I remember thinking their jaffa cakes were more expensive and were mishapes! The only good thing about Lidl is their fireworks!
Aldi I have been to once and thought it was utter crap. Apart from some little chocolate things I bought, that's probably all I'd eat from there.
My MIL is a massive Aldi fan, especially the seafood pizza, OH had some round there once and it smelled on his breath for a week, made me sick!
We also all went for tea once and I was spooning some lasagne onto my plate and said 'oh this looks a different colour' (it was pinky), the reply was 'oh it's pork lasagne from Aldi', well it was revolting, I had to pretend to eat it.
That seafood pizza actually DID make my husband sick. It was loaded with garlic and mussels and all sorts of stomach churning things. He spent all night throwing it up and the the stink of garlic in the house for a couple of days after that was nauseating.

This thread has really made me smile! At the end of the day I think most of us are looking to save money and I for one will shop anywhere where I get good value. This could be Tesco, Sainsbury's or Lidl - I do most of them every week!
My daughter loves Lidl's tinned chicken in white sauce - even better than the one I sometimes get from M&S. We also love their vanilla ice-cream which is on a par with Carte D'or in my opinion. My mum swears that their special museli is better than any of the big brand names. I also love their individual tiramisu. I don't find the experience of shopping in Lidl as pleasurable as other supermarkets - but I think for value for money they are hard to beat for some items.
It is just a case of paying your money and making your choice. And have never smelled a funny whiff.......

LOL, I shower every day love so maybe that's why I notice the stench in them. I think you're the one that needs to shower if you don't notice the reek:rolleyes: (Do you sometimes wish you hadn't said something? lol).

well i have to say aldi is my favorite supermarket buy every other week:
spicy curry snack pots (really spicy and delicious)
24 pack meaty crisps
brown sauce (way better than HP)
Wheatabix
german ham
cheese
garlic sausage
cookies
custard creams
bacon (the low fat one £1.19 lovely and thick, tasty and not salty at all)
fabric softener
carbonara sauce (jar)
the list is endless, believe me my OH was such a food snob but even hes converted, we do still go to asda, tesco and morrisons for some tins and other bits but overall its aldi all the way!! we do then go into iceland which is next door to aldi to stock the freezer up

I have never been in an Aldi or Lidl. Am I alone on this?! There is one in Beckenham I go past every now and then but have never felt the compulsion to go in. I think that no matter how much I hear it said I would still doubt the quality and that would make me overthink the eating
I might pop in though and see what everyone is raving about. Would have to take my own shopping bag though

For that reason alone, it would be rude not to pay Aldi a visit

no offence, but some people, well me, have to shop at different shops.
it is the only way to get everything you need, getting the best value.
if i did all my shopping in one place, i wouldn't have enough food for a week.
i'm jealous of you that you can do it all in one place.
Sorry, not quite true, I do use different shops sometimes, such as Home Bargains which is great for cleaning stuff etc and Christmas bits, but I don't always have time to split the shopping.
I will tell you that today.........drum roll............I popped in to an Aldi!!
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised that it was more organised than the one I tried a while back, although this one is fairly new anyway.
I didn't think it was any cheaper than tesco though, apart from the little plastic tubs of things like flapjack bites which were 99p.
I didn't buy anything though.

I've never shopped in Netto - don't have one near me.
I like certain products in Lidl - particularly the Christmas foods range but it's always so busy and sometimes a bit chaotic. I used to love (along with several people I know) the vacuum packed beetroot but they have now changed supplier and this one is nowhere near as good. In fact , I've not found a shop yet that matches the taste & quality of the beet that Lidl used to sell.
Aldi is busier than it used to be but on the whole, not too bad. It's very clean, well organised and there is plenty of space. The returns policy is good too - although I must say I've noticed a few items go through the tills classed as something else. For instance I bought a step-exercise machine and when I looked at the receipt it said that it was a strimmer! Same price but if I had discovered a fault with it, it might have been difficult to return.
I love their premium vanilla ice cream and some of the hams are good too.
"Pumpkins in the cornfields, gold among the brown.
Leaves of rust and scarlet, trembling slowly down.
Birds that travel southward, lovely time to play.
Nothing is as pleasant as an autumn day!"
I used to hate the idea of these kind of shops but iw as dragged into an Aldi near us and it was brand new... well I wasnt loving the place but their burgers with stilton inside in the freezer are a bargain, 4 for something like £1.79, would cost u at least that for 2 in tesco.
Personally, if I make a pie, for example steak pie, I go through all the meat removing any fat, and if I made a chicken pie I would use chicken breast.
This is a serious question:
Why?!
Have you never heard of marbling?
Putting breast meat into a pie is a serious waste of money, and removing all the fat is a serious waste of time.

I do get what Zoe is saying about meat products, I'm the same. I like chicken breasts, steaks, lamb chops, nice joints, VLF mince, premium sausages etc. I like meat that hasn't been messed about with.
So can I assume that you frequent your local butcher? If not why not?
The supermarkets p*** around with your food a lot more than you realise.

[quote=Silicon;14302747]This is a serious question:
Why?! Because I don't want to spoil the enjoyment of eating a pie by chomping on gristle.
Have you never heard of marbling? No, what is it? I'm not a good old fashioned cook, I must admit.
Putting breast meat into a pie is a serious waste of money, and removing all the fat is a serious waste of time. I couldn't stomach eating it if it was full of the crappy bits, I'm just fussy with meat.

Obviously there are smelly people in this world & they go into lots of shops.
I think as Aldi is a smaller shop, smells tend to linger
But, in all fairness it's the people, not the shop.
I've been in Tesco, Sainsbury's, WH Smith & numerous other stores where there have been smelly shoppers.........and staff!!

I've just done a price comparison on-line between Tesco and lidl's offers available for 15 September:
Nescasfe original 200g lidl £3.00 Tesco £4.13
Hellman's mayonnaise 400g lidl £1.25 Tesco £1.72
Flora Original & light 500g lidl £1.00 Tesco £1.00
Definitely bargains to be had -I'll be along there this afternoon.
I have appreciated comments as to whats good or not as I'm sometimes not sure what to buy when products aren't 'usual' brand names.
ps My family like family size lasagne from lidl.
We like to pop in Lidl and Aldi now and then. They got really good bargin and just buy what you fancy. I think they are good for value. Aldi's electrical products are very reliable.
