sallyx go to the nearest running club, and ask them a few questions.
Most clubs like newbies to be able to run for 30 mins, but not all of them do.
I used to be a sweeper for a club,i just run as slow as the slowest person,so that they never get lost.
I am joining a new running club on monday, and i can't run for 30 mins yet
I did a 3 mile run/walk programm today :j

My marathon journey - day 1 of 264
Not a very hopeful start, as I haven't slept properly the last couple of nights, but I was determined to get going with this training thing. After a big pasta lunch, an afternoon packet of crisps and a couple of obscure German sweeties that someone at work had brought back from holiday (bizarrely, they'd been to Greece, and the sweets are called 'New York', but we'll not dwell on that too much), I was ready to think about running. I finished some work off, had a think about it, then set up my Justgiving website for the marathon. Seeing it up there on the screen made me realise I really had to get off my *rse and actually run, so I had a quick change and then headed off on my usual route home. It's 2.5 miles - I measured everywhere I went regularly when training for the Moonwalk - and I reckon I ran just under half of it. Some of the hills were seriously tricky, I have to learn to pace myself better as I have a tendency to go at it as hard as I can (behave Rich). I also have to be better prepared - as I'd been planning to go to the gym I'd brought my stuff in a rucksack, so had to run with that on, which wasn't particularly comfortable, and I'd forgotten to bring anything to tie my hair back, so ended up with a lovely sweaty shaggy dog look. Still, apart from one moment where I struggled to catch my breath on a particularly steep hill, it wasn't too bad - I even managed to avoid the rain until the last five minutes!

OK, I ventured on here this morning and the first thing I read was yesterday's post about the Bungay Marathon.......
........now this has sort of spurred me on to do something. My dad, up until the time he died, was Chairman of the Bungay Marathon, so this event is very very close to me, emotionally. I have attended the event over the last couple of years to present a prize in his name, but not run it for many many years (ok, so I did the half - two times round that loop is for mad people only!).
I have applied for London - (have not done that for 16 years either!) but am obviously unlikely to get in as it is the first time for years that I have entered. If I do get in, I need to get running anyway. If I don't get in, I really should run the Bungay half instead.
So, I am committing, here and now, to run for my Dad at Bungay next year.
Writing this has been hard.......much harder than getting out in the dark, rain and cold over the next few months is likely to be.
Anyone who wants to join me is more than welcome!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
Hypno - sounds amazing, and will no doubt be very emotional!
Look forward to regular updates on your training!
Beinerts, i am thinking 10k run for the meet up, and definitely next year for me... to give me time to get up to speed.....
I think the logic for a 10k is that it is challenging for some of us, but still worthwhile enough for those who are beyond that distance naturallyI'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -
hypno06 good luck with your training.
Having done the Bungay maratho this year,I am hoping to get fit enough to do it again next year.
As I live alot nearer now than I did last yearOwing on CC £00.00 :j

Well done Hypno, when is the Bungay run? I know what you mean about it being hard to write down, I'm doing Edinburgh and raising money for the Stroke Association because of my gran who died from a stroke three years ago. I started to get a bit emotional writing on my fundraising page, and I have to admit that I've just had a good old cry when I got in the shower. She would be so happy to think she'd spurred me on to do something like this though, and I'm sure your dad would too.Debt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0

Its getting a little confusing for my limited brain capabilities to keep track of who's planning to do what in terms of races. And since the number of people seems to be expanding like an American's waistline I think it is probably a good idea to keep a running schedule with outline plans and then, as specific races are entered, updated accordingly. So far:

im trying to find us a race, would people prefere a 10k? or half to aim for? Ideally a place that does both but thats proving difficult
Yes, Sally, I agree that a 10k is ideal for everybody. Plus you can just about struggle round a 10k after a bit of a session the night before, a half marathon needs a bit more serious contemplation!
Does this constitute a bid to become Fixtures Secretary then? It sure looks that way!Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j
