  • Looking for some advice from all you lovely people please. I havejust bought my first shin bone to make soup. What is the best way to do this - cook the bone first, shred the meat & use this and the stock to make the soup? Trying to make nourishing soups / stews etc for my dad (very ill with little appetite) and thought this would be good. Grateful for any suggestions please - oh he won't eat chicken, eggs or fish!

    Thanks

    Hi

Can I join the weekly challenge this month please. It'll all be new for me cos I move house on Sunday (kids left home, well 1 left and one away at uni:j and I'll be starting from scratch (just me and OH) and no freezer:eek:

We're both eating healthily so I'm going to shop locally and a couple of days at a time but also build up emergency store of canned and bottled stuff and dry stores.

I'm aiming for £40 a week at first and will see how I get on. (Oh and we go on hol in the 4th week which is why I want to go weekly if thats OK)

    Good luck everybody

    Hi CherryBlossom

I would roast it first, then strip it off and use the bone to make the stock.. You get more flavour and colour out of a roasted bone ;) .... I know its not everyones "thing" but does your dad like liver? i love it and its full of iron, goes soft once cooked so wouldn't take much effort to eat ..with a bit of mashed potato/veg
hope it helps..im sure you will get loads of help on here
oohh just a thought what about Ricepud made with full fat milk n a drop of cream ;) when my sis was recently very ill it was one of the few things she could/would eat.... oohh HM egg custard..another easy to eat, simple thing with lots of goodness -you don't even have to do the pastry :D
Ok just spottted he doesn't like eggs..hmmm egg custard without eggs leaves custard..another thing you can cram with cals :p

MrsM- I[strike] seem to be on the weekly list twice, once in the correct place with no budget, and once in the wrong place (above 'N') with the correct budget! (Just to clarify its £40 per week).Thanks.[/strike]
Oooh you fixed it, thanks again.
