  • I would like to go from London (any main station) to Newquay on the 5th September (AM) returning on the 7th (Lunchtime).

    Any tips please?

Is it too early to get good fares?
  • Hey guys

    Bit muddled...
A number of people here have said that Manchester to Edinburgh is a Megatrain route, but when I looked it up on the Megatrain website, it only showed this as a megabus route - with megatrain routes limited to the south. I don't understand!!!

It WAS a megatrain route, but ceased to be last November when Virgin lost the XC franchise.

New Megatrain routes are starting as from 14 July 2008. All on the following Virgin West Coast Voyager Trains:

04:58 Manchester Piccadilly - Glasgow Central
08:03 Birmingham New Street - Edinburgh Waverley
11:03 Birmingham New Street - Glasgow Central
21:03 Birmingham New Street - Preston
12:51 Edinburgh Waverley - Birmingham New Street
10:10 Glasgow Central - Birmingham New Street
20:10 Glasgow Central - Manchester Piccadilly

Initially there will be 40 seats on offer on each train per day. Prices will range from £1 to £9, plus 50p booking fee. Passengers can book upto 03:00 the day before departure.
If you go on www.megatrain.com and book for these services for travel on or after 14 July, the tickets should be available, until sold out.
  • There were no saver tickets left Stafford to London for the day I needed, so I would have needed to pay full fare (£46.30). I split the journey at Nuneaton & got the ticket for £16.70. That’s a saving of £29.60!

Stafford to London: £46.30 (walk up fare single)
Stafford to Nuneaton: £6.20 (cheap day single)
Nuneaton to London: £10.50 (advance ticket)
  • Just went to book some tickets on the national express website at it offers 10 per cent online reduction but when i went to book it was the same price as other sites.Am i doing something wrong?

Like GNER before it, it only offers a discount on IT'S tickets on IT'S trains

What a bummer.By the time i had registered with them, stopped to come and post my question and gone back to the site, the advanced fares had gone up.Must have sold all the cheaper ones.My original journey was £40.10 return which i managed to get down to £24.00 by split ticketing. But by the time i decided not to use national rail and went back to trainline, the prices had gone up to £34.50.He who hesitates is lost i suppose. Will know in the future.

Four of using this route so that's an extra £40.00 in the train operators pockets.GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

I've used a split at either or both of Cheltenham/Wolverhampton. Works well for Saver returns, giving best flexibility of trains, but may be worth checking for advance tickets. Just make sure trains stop there, though most do.

Please please please get the terminology right - it's confusing enough anyway.

There cannot have been 'no saver tickets left' - there were either never any in the first place (peak train) or they were there, buyable right up to the time of departure. They are walk on tickets, not quota controlled.
