Paypal Compulsary on all listings from June 3rd

n March we announced that we’ll require all sellers on eBay.co.uk to offer PayPal as a payment method on their listings. We can now confirm that the requirement will take effect on 3rd June 2008.

We’re making this change as buyers are more confident and likely to buy on eBay, and sellers more likely to see their listings convert into sales, when PayPal is offered as a payment method. It also means we can provide protection to buyers should things go wrong. Currently, over 95% of listings on the site already offer PayPal.

"Today may be a good day to bury bad news"....

To be fair, I offer Paypal on all listings anyway, so this wont affect me much, but I expect to see a lot more threads about sellers offering Paypal but not accepting it when it comes to payment.

No mention of an exception to Collection Only items though.

It won't affect me either but I am still cross at the draconian measures that the new CEO is pushing through.

The pinks are still saying on ebay that there will be no exception to the paypal rule even for collected items.

Pah! Anyone who wants to collect an item from me will just have to wait until the Paypal payment has cleared into my bank account then.

I really don't see how they think this will be a good idea. Surely for things like cars, nobody will take Paypal? They are idiots if they do!!

Clearing it to your bank account though won't help at all as paypal will just demand th emoney back and if you refuse to pay you'll have to abandon your paypal account and that's it for selling on ebay ever again. For 99p collected items I can't see it being a problem as it is probably just easier to refund the buyer in cases of dispute, the biggie would be people collecting expensive items like laptops or TVs and then slamming in a fraudulent use of card complaint or even a straight item not received one.

At least previously if you had problems with paypal you could still sell without it for a few weeks while you sorted things out..now that option has gone.

I have recently sold some items collection only where the category insisted Paypal was an option. I stated in capitals "cash on collection" on listing - but some still paid by paypal. I simply refunded the money, explained why and asked for cash on collection. All have been ok about it. I will continue to do this - there is no way I'm taking Paypal for collection only.

Paypal will be a compulsory option - it doesn't stop someone paying by other methods though.

If the paypal payment is received, then it means the auction has already ended.

At worse it would be a Non-Performing-Seller report from the buyer, but the vast majority of people would understand why the payment was being refunded. I would have serious doubts about any buyer who tried to force me into using paypal for a collection only item.

I always offer Paypal, but at the checkout I also state that I accept, Postal Orders, Cheques and Other.

So if I sell an item and they post me a Postal Order or some pound coins between two sheets of card then that's upto the buyer really aint it...?

But it's not an option if you are stating you will not accept it ;)
...and that's why you run the risk of having the listing pulled using those words.

You must accept any of the forms of payment you list, else the buyer has the right to file a non-performing seller against you.

Having said that, I too would have severe doubts about anyone who wanted to pay me via paypal for items collected in person, especially if I offer cash on collection as an alternative. Whenever I have collected items in person, it is not usually to simply save the p+p costs (which are usually less than the expense of me collecting the item - I've only ever bought 1 item from the same town as I live in). The reason for the vast majority of cash on collection purchases I make is because I was not 100% sure about the item/seller. With cash on collection, I am given the opportunity to inspect the item to ensure it complies fully with the listing description before handing over my money. Most good sellers understand this and, in my experience, actively encouraged me to inspect and accept the item before looking for payment.

I agree totally Premier, however it's a lot cheaper to risk my listing being pulled than it is risk my Paypal payment being reclaimed! I'm selling a lot of collection only items over the next few months due to big home improvements and a clear out - if they pull my listings, I'll revert back to a postcard in the newsagent's window - and Ebay will lose their fees - and I bet I wouldn't be the only one!
