Hi everyone, ok I have decided that this has to happen. I have checked with my bank about the joint account. I can put a block on it so neither of us can take money out. As far as I am concerned Scottish Law means he won't get my savings. I clarified with a work colleague who did the same thing and moved out except she had a mortgage with her ex.

I have collected important documents ie birth certificate/passport/car documents etc and put them in the safe at work. Have I missed anything?

    Anymore of your fab suggestions?

Yep, face the fear and do it anyway ;)

You've obviously been planning this for a long time so good luck!

I agree with previous poster! Just go ahead and do it! You'll feel better afterwards.

I used to live with an abusive partner for 3.5 years and wanted to leave him for most of that time but was too scared, in the end I finished work early came home packed my stuff and left without saying anything as I was too scared how he'd react! Best thing I ever did!!! Less than 2 and a half years later I'm living with the man of my dreams, engaged and we have a 4 month old baby. Things can change really fast so go for it! Good luck :)

Second to all the above posters. Just do it.....and Good luck! I split with a partner of 5 1/2 years and then left to travel overseas. No big issues in our relationship as such, but we were heading in different directions and had fallen out of love. I can honestly say it was the best decision I ever made, even though in the months leading up to it, I thought my life would be over if we weren't together.

You are strong enough to do this, and you've done the research to protect yourself financially.

    Good Luck!

If you think thats weepy, try this one..

    The lyrics describe so perfectly the gradual dimming of a relationship and the most poignant lines for me are;

    I learned how to laugh
And I learned how to cry
Well I learned how to love
    even learned how to lie
So you'd think I could learn
    How to tell you goodbye
You don't bring me flowers anymore

Because thats the bit we are so bad at doing.

    Recognising when to say goodbye.
