My DD1 starts secondary school a week today (sniff sniff, i can't believe she is growing up so quickly). She has to go on a school bus for 20 minutes which she catches at 7.45 am. As this is early she will struggle to get up and i know she will not have time to eat breakfast and let it go down before travelling and she isn't very good at travelling anyway.

We have decided she will take a breakfast bar and a drink for when she arrives as she will have approx 5 mins before lessons begin to eat it.

The only trouble is i can't seem to find any healthy recipes that i can freeze...can any of you wonderful oldstylers help?
  • how about making twinks hobnobs but in a square tin so then they can be cut into bars?

i love them like this with extra fruit and less sugar :)

  • try this muffin recipe, the raw mixure keeps in the fridge for 30 days so you can bake them every couple of days.
I usually add a couple of blueberries or other soft fruit if I have it.

  • hi there, most of the recipes on here for flapjacks/cereal bars etc i have found keep for up to a week (certainly a school week) in an airtight tub. i usually do a cook-a-thon once a week for my hubby's lunchbox and they all seem to keep well (if hidden very well that is!)HTH

    Hi kippers,

These are favourites with my lot and they freeze well although they'll keep for up to a week in an airtight container.

    Cereal/snack bars

    5 oz butter
    3 oz brown sugar
    1tablespoon golden syrup

    7 oz porridge oats
½ oz mixed seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, sesame and linseed)
    ½ oz dessicated coconut
    ½ oz chopped nuts
small handful raisins or other dried fruit

Melt butter, sugar and syrup in a saucepan until disolved.
Add dry ingredients into the syrup mix and stir until well coated.
Press into a well greased baking tin.
Cook at 180 degrees for around 20 minutes until lightly golden. Keep a close eye as they can burn easily.
Remove from the oven and mark slices with a knife but leave in the tin until completely cold or they’ll fall to bits when you try to get them out.

I think you could probably substitute honey and/or molasses for the golden syrup for a slightly heathier option.

There are lots more recipes on these threads that may help:

I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the suggestions together.

The latest Asda magazine has a recipe for some with berries in them, it might be on the Asda site but I can post it if you can't find it.
Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!
  • I had a recipe for cereal bars using fruit & fibre cereal but I cannot find it and wondered if anyone else has it. I know it was out of one of the supermarket magazines but cannot remember which.
