Hi all,
Not sure if I should be in the pub with this thread, but here goes anyway.
Does anyone have a recipe for a chewy fruit and cereal bar, it needs to be held together with something healthier than golden syrup and sugar!
Any ideas would be gratefully received. Call of Duty widow :rolleyes:0 -
If you type 'healthy snacks' into the search function, one of the first threads has a recipe. Or you could check the index under packed lunches.0

Hi bagpuss fan,
There's an earlier thread that should help:
muesli/cereal bars recipes?
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the recipes together.

I've got a GREAT recipe that I think will fit the bill!
200g dried fruit and nuts: ANYTHING works, Trail mix, Apricots, figs, dates, as well as sultanas, rasins, dried cranberries.....your favorite combination.
175g Porridge Oats
3 Ripe bananas (mashed) Great use for REDUCED bananas :T
75ml sunflower oil
Mash bananas (I use a potoato masher) Stir in other ingredients, put spoonfuls onto a baking sheet lined with greasproof paper. You can shape into little bars, or rounds as you prefer. Cook for 20 minutes at gas mark 4 - don't know electric.... Check often as the raisins and stuff burn quickly.
They are moist and chewy...you just have to try to understand. The first batch we made was so good, we just had to make another straight away (yep we ate the lot!) I quite often double up too. They keep a couple of days....

Thanks, that sounds ideal, I was looking for something to feed my unsuspecting DH flax seeds and anything else good for cholesterol lowering! In his words "I am NOT eating seeds" - oh yes he is, he just won't know it!! Call of Duty widow :rolleyes:0

Oh yes seeds...I forgot those!!! We often use seeds, sunflower, and pumpkin in the mix...you could certainly sneak in flax

Thanks for the recipe Kate.
I went into town today and in Julian Graves it's 'everything half price' so I came out laden with fruit, nuts and seeds, and have the mixture in the oven cooking now.:T
I'll let you know how they turn out later.0 -
I was wondering, since the price of my favourite breakfast bars have reached ridiculous prices (Alpen light, £1.89 for SIX now), does anyone have a recipe for cheap and healthy breakfast bars that I could make in a batch for work (not a big fan of cereal!)
I've had a look on the search but there was only one other thread asking about brekkie bars and it was specific to ingredients the OP already had.
Since I want to make them healthy, does anyone have a recipe but uses none/not to much butter and honey (I know I'm asking a lot here)
Thanks!Sometimes you have to go throughthe rain to get to therainbow0 -
Nigella Lawson has breakfast bars in her Nigella Express book.
If you scroll right down the page the recipe is there!

I've made them - they are very easy and I thought they were absolutely delicious. I think you could adjust the amount of condensed milk slightly if you don't want it too sweet but it does bind it together; most of the sweetness comes from the cranberries. They're still quite expensive to make unless you can shop in bulk perhaps. Just pulling wholefood ingredients of the shelf in Tesco worked out quite expensive!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
