Abandoned Vehicle on my Drive!

I came back from Holiday to find an unknown Car parked on my drive!

Called the council, who told me, as it’s taxed and on private land they can’t do anything and I should contact the police. So I went along to my local police station who told me the exact same thing and I should go back to the council!!! :(

What can I do? (Legally)

Many Thanks

    Oh my goodness, how bizarre!

Could I ask, is the car in good condition?!

I would go to the police station, and if you get the same response again, ask them to call the council while you are there. Hopefully then you will get to the bottom of it.

Please let us know what happens! x
    Gone ... or have I?

Can you have it towed away?? (you may have to pay though sadly - the council won't touch it unless its on a public road)

Id have thought you may be entitled to find out who the registered keeper is. I hope the police atleast checked if it was reported stolen or somesuch?

    1) Ask your neighbours to see if anyone knows owt. It may be one of them thought it would be ok while you were away.

    2) I think you can get the registered owner from the dvla. Call them up & find out.
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.

    Very odd.

Could you move it/tow/drag onto the road so it is the Councils/Police's problem?

The next thing is, has the car definitely been dumped? e.g. its an old rust bucket - could you get the local scrap yard to take it away?

Is the handbrake on? Is it locked?

You may be able to push it off your land onto the public road, where it becomes the council's responsiblity.

    Also, is it taxed?

It's a P reg polo and alarmed...Police did a check to see if it's reported stolen but came back negative.

Asked neighbours but they don't know anything about it.

Is it possible to find out about the owner's address from the DVLA? As the police won't reveal to me, who the registered keeper is (But have told me, they are local).
  • Just call a local scrap dealer (the type who only advertise a mobile number) I'm sure it will be gone within the hour!!!!!!

I would pack your car across your driveway so that whoever parked it there cant get out when they come back for it. If it hasnt gone within a day or 2 then I would have to have a think what to do

Could the police not get in touch with the registered keeper?

When did you return from holiday and how long has the car been there (ie. do your neighbours know how long its been there or how long have you been away/been back?)

Sounds an odd thing to do though does parking your car on soemone elses driveway without permission
