They cost around the same as the fine, but involve at least half a day (probably a whole day unless the course is local) which makes it expensive if you lose pay by attending and it does also depend on what value you put on your own time!

Exactly my thinking years ago when i got caught in roadworks 60mph reduced to 30, but they had moved the roadworks down the road but left the signs behind. I was doing 40mph.

It was cheaper to pay the £60 fine and take the points than lose time and money trying to defend it.

I was with direct line who made no charge when i told them and no premium increase either.
DL were always cheap for me but over the past few years they are over double my premium.

Take the points. A few mph over the limit doesn't mean you are not a good driver. It's easy money catching out the occasional unwary driver.

You take the points and you won't get offered the course next time and then you'll be on 6,

I found the course quite interesting

If it were many years ago and you had a defence you'd have got your costs repaid.

    Well.....not quite.

Having 3 points on your licence isn't any reason not to be offered a course if you have a "next time".

There is no bar to going on a course just because you have points.

If your offence is eligible for a SAC you would be offered one!

I didnt know that. No sites like MSE back then.

Would it have been a valid defence though? Roadworks moved 1/3rd of a mile down the road at least, but the temporary 30mph signs left in place.

The course changed my driving completely. I have genuinely not exceeded the speed limit since. I know it annoys other drivers but tough. Life becomes so much easier as a result.

I doubt it if the signs were correct and the tro was still in date.

I'd rather take the course and sweat it out being talked down to than take the points.

That's exactly what it's about, I know i've mentioned it before, but I used to work next to one of the places that ran the speed awareness courses and most of the "clients" were elderly or retired and not really aware of the speed limits.
