3 points or speed awareness?

Hi all,

Got caught 6mph over the limit so I've got the take 3 points or do a speed awareness option.

I know both cost about the same £100.

But how much would 3 points really affect my insurance premium in monetary terms? If really rather not go to the class but if my insurance is really going to suffer then I'll bite he bullet.

And any other hidden downsides to the 3 points? Aside from being closer to the 12.

Thanks

3 points will make little or no difference.

You can find out now by doing dummy quotes online with and without 3 points in your history.

(Though check out what difference 6 make - can you be sure this will be the only time you offend - and get caught - in the next 5 years?)

Do some dummy quotes with the three points on, nobody here is going to be able to give you any figures.

3 might not make much difference, but 6 would and you might not get offered again.

Why don't you want to do the class?

Remember the 3 points will be on the insurance forms for 3-5 years (I forget) so factor in that as well

Just do the course and have a clean license which gives you some wiggle room if caught again in the future (can only do one in 3 years) vs getting 6 points

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

They cost around the same as the fine, but involve at least half a day (probably a whole day unless the course is local) which makes it expensive if you lose pay by attending and it does also depend on what value you put on your own time!

It also depends on what value a future employer may put on having a 'clean' licence.

The one I did was 4 hrs including a break and was from 4pm - 8pm and contrary to myth, we weren't made to feel like naughty boys and girls, the course was informative, well presented and at times fun.

Who knows, the OP might even learn something, and avoid any future offending.

    No doubt.

(The topic was why would you not want to do the course)

So that'd come down to 2 factors:

    1. Will your insurance premium increase over the 5 years be more or less than the cost of a days work / vacation? Considering evening courses are available you might only need to take a half day.

    2. Will you need to use the points in the next 5 years? You might not be offered the course next time. I'd much rather hae a course and 3 points than 6 points.
