My son had Vodaphone when he lived in town, but when he moved into his first Council flat in an Essex/Suffolk borders village, there was no signal and voda's response was basically 'tough luck mate'.

He has switched to '3' and it works perfectly (although the internet can be a bit slow due to the distance to the nearest mast).

I have been on '3' for longer than I care to remember and have a good experience with coverage over all.

I have an HSPDA+ compliant handset, so when at work (and within range of a compatible mast) I can surf the net at 20Mb/s (yes, I did say 20Mb/s) and that is on 3g.

In fact Three's 3g data servce when runs only 4Mb/s slower than their rivals 4g services.

'3' also allow you to install and use services such as skype and google hangouts (VoIP services) so you can call using your phone on free wifi rather than your call limits when abroad (in fact, '3' used to use kit in their base stations that sent mobile calls over VoIP as data costs were cheaper than voice traffic, but stopped when the internet became so clogged-up that it started to affect call quality).

You can use Skype app on 3 PAYG to make free 0800 calls. It matters when some banks or cards only have 0800 contact numbers.

On the Reading to Torquay train (3 hours) I was disappointed that only about 20% of the route was covered by 3, it shows how they neglect low population areas. Apparently 4G won't help much, they need lots of extra masts or 3G on the train to solve it.

WeQ4U app will dial any 0800 number as a geo one, and many 0845 087x ones too!!

Yes but I don't trust WeQ4U for anything that has to be secure since you never know if the divert number is genuine or one that can be listened into and recorded by hackers who have planted the number. WeQ4U uses the well-known SayNoTo0870 database apparently, to which the general public can add new numbers.

I did a little test on one such 0800 number and then checked recent calls to see where it was dialling to. It was an 033 number that is actually is not on any public website or even SayNoTo0870!

WeQ4U takes no responsibility on the genuine-ness of the divert numbers.

Depends if it was part of the agreement to cancel, did they ask you to return it?
If it was a new contract and there was a problem from the start then yes you would need to return it in order to put both parties back to square one.

As Silk says, it depends what you agreed to do with the network.

You don't NEED to return the handset, just like they don't NEED to cancel the contract unless you do whatever was agreed.

Only if specified under the early termination you agreed. The handset was otherwise yours from day one of the contract.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thanks !
I have been a Three customer for 5 months, the last 2 without any network signal in my postcode area.
The customer service manager said that it is their fault and it probably wont be working for at least an other 30 days and if i wish i can have a free contract cancellation.

Accept the cancelation and keep the phone in that case, but make sure you get confirmation that it is cost free.
