November 2013 Grocery Challenge

NSWeekend. Was sorely tempted to go to shops, but did a stocktake and decided to go for a walk instead. Saving money and burning calories! Don't think I would have made that decision without this challenge, so thanks to everyone here. :j
Going to try and last without going into the SM for the whole of this week as well so I can carry over the remaining budget into Dec and that should help ease the Christmas spend!
As you can see from above, I did burn my calories from mid week pig out.

Congrats meg72 - that's a really good haul.
Florenceem - Massive Well Done to the Mr.Florenceem - that's an amazing amount. It's so true isn't it about those lifestyle changes rather than the yo-yo. Trying very hard this time to lose weight the 'right' way and make sure it stays off.

Done meal plan for next week but subject to change as not quite enough LO from Sunday roast to carry through for a meal. Will repurpose it for a lunch instead and will think of something.
Had weekend eats of Beef Roast (Sun), Mediterranean Pork with roast butternut squash and Parsnips (Sat), Mussels in a white wine buerre blanc sauce (Fri).M3 Dec2015 #160 Target £150,000 (BU £155000)0 -

I'm doing really well this month and think for the first time ever I'll end this month within my budget. I have had tons of help from my husband after I sat down and explained how much we need to do this challenge.
We went round Al*I yesterday with £47, added up as we went round, got a great shop and it came to exactly that to the penny!
We have one more week to go.... I truly hope and pray we do this.
Thanks to everybody who helps us x :T0/4500 -

Shiningfaery - Friday's dinner sounds interesting (General Tso chicken), could you post the recipe or give a link to it if it's online. Thanks.
Have decided what we're eating today but must do the rest of my menu for the week as going shopping tomorrow because it's market day and I like to pick up some fruit and veg there.
Tonight's dinner will be pork & ginger stirfry with egg noodles.
I'm sure I've got enough food in the freezers to make the rest of the meals this week, apart from veg.

Finally back to eating solids now after 5 days on a liquid only diet. I don't know if I can stand to have another soup or smoothie for a while. At least my swollen gums have gone now whoo!!
Felt like a saint as even though I couldn't eat it I still made big batches of cottage pie, Curried Rice dish and a lasagne for dinners for the OH and some for the freezer. Although OH got to most of the portions destined for the freezer so will have to re menu plan for the rest of the month. Will still need to purchase some onions and milk but hopefully that should be all till next month - fingers crossed.
Think I was too ambitious with my original budget of £80 as I've only managed to get it down to £100 previously so think it may have been too drastic a cut for my first month. Live and learn.
I have started to explore local fruit and veg stall and have seen a meat stall in my local market has anyone bought from a meat market before? I'm a bit dubious as I don't know about the quality/source/age of the meat although there seemed to be a little crowd forming around the stall so it can be that bad .... right?
Do they have to have the same regulations as butchers shops?
Also I have a 4pt of milk with todays date on it and I don't want to throw it down the sink. Any suggestions on recipes for how to use it up so it can go in the freezer? so far only idea i have is a white sauce.
My Money saving tip - Don't throw away out of date eggs. I have been using out of date eggs for years some as old as 9 months "out of date" and still as fresh as when I bought them. My great grandmother always used to do this as she always said "ignore the date, if it's off you'll know!." I have yet to come across one that is not fresh. That voice in your head that says you can’t do this is a LIAR!

First Trouble - you can just freeze the milk as is - there is no need to 'make' it into anything as such.
Not sure re market stalls- but I guess they should be under same standards as a butcher as they are still using and selling meat. I often used to use a market stall butcher and it was great - good quality, good prices and great knowledge.M3 Dec2015 #160 Target £150,000 (BU £155000)0 -

Certainly its a firm fav in my house. Its a recipe from Chings Fast food by Ching he Huang.
Serves 2-4 (think its 2 large meals 4 smaller)
2 skinless chicken breast or 4 thighs cut into 1.5 cm cubes
salt and ground white pepper
1 Tbsp cornflour
1 Tbsp groundnut oil (i have used veg too no difference)
1 clove garlic crushed
4 dried red chillies
1 Tbsp Shaoshing rice wine or dry sherry
4 spring onions chopped into 2.5 cm lengths (or sliced like me)
For sauce
1 Tbsp Yellow bean sauce
1 Tbsp light soy sauce
1 Tbsp tomato ketchup
1 Tbsp Chilli sauce
1 tsp soft brown light sugar or runny honey
1 tsp dark soy sauce.
1. Place chicken in bowl with salt pepper and cornflour mix well to coat chicken.
2. Mix ingredients for sauce in another bowl.
3. Heat oil in Wok over high heat, Add garlic and dried chillies fry for few seconds then add chicken. As chicken start to turn opaque add rice wine.
4. Cook for another 2 mins then pour in sauce and bring to boil.
5. Cook chicken in sauce until cooked through and sauce has reduced and thickened.
6. Add spring onions and cook for another minute. Then serve.
