    This isn't as bad as it reads. You will still be allowed the original size but when flights are full and everyone has carry ons, there is not enough room and some are forced to be put in the hold (usually an enticement of early boarding is given to volunteers).

    All this announcement says is that the smaller ones won't be gate checked in this manner.

    Yes, that's how I read it too. Doesn't Ryanair already do this sometimes if the flight is full? When the last passengers board, if there's no room for their cabin baggage, they put it in the hold. When I had the misfortune last year of flying with Ryanair and was one of the last to board, the cabin crew wanted to put my cabin baggage in the hold until I refused because my laptop was in it.
