I loved low carb, lost 7 stones easily and never felt hungry. Its the onlt diet that works for me. though I have put 2 stone back on since I became virtually housebound. i don't sit around much and try to keep busy but not the same as all that public transport and a physical job.
When I was a kiddie you didnt need a car as Mums shopped at the corner shop daily. If you had a colour tv you were rich and Christmas was a low key affair. its true that expectations were lower. A much simpler life.Clearing the junk to travel light

I will get my caravan0 -
I'm just de-lurking to say that I am low carbing, and have lost a stone and a half by eating lots of lovely food and never feeling hungry. Plenty of good fat, (olive oils, coconut oil, avocado), a little protein and loads of vegs(sorry Mardatha, the green ones particularly!!).
Berries and double/clotted cream or thick greek yogurt.
I'd recommend it!!
Back to lurking again.xx0 -
I've been trying to prepare 4 - 5 small meals daily, as hubby has problems being always hungry, doesn't want big meals, tends to slip out and buy himself bags of sweets in mid afternoon
A handfull of nuts or fruit wont help. I will try more protein in meals, but need a choice of snacks that are filling but aren't too carb-high. Any ideas?0 -
As I did not need to snack, I used these for when I needed portable food.
Cold sausages (look for those with 2.5 carbs per 100g)
Salami sticks
Mixed nuts
egg mayo with ham chopped into it (eaten off the spoon but I have weird tastes :rotfl:)
ditto prawn mayo.
Hard boiled eggs
Cubed cheese
Egg and ham pies - line muffin tins with ham. Fill with mix of grated cheese with chopped spring onion, break over an egg, season and top with more cheese or a bit of cream. Bake at 180 for 15 mins or until the egg is just done. Leave to get cold for eating on the hoof. Filling can be anything you like plus the egg.Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -
Mar - have you tried the other was around? I know it sounds a bit daft, but we were hoodwinked by the cereals giants to believe that grains are 'right' for breakfast. For once, the French had it right and cheese and ham are a much better start to the day because we need the fat and protein to give us the energy for the day (whatever we are doing :rotfl:). Carbs make you dozy, and whist I know oats are supposed to be better, I have never found that I am any less hungry having porridge over shreddies
Having the main meal at night means we don't have time to process it properly before we go to sleep as the gut shuts down for the night.
Brilliant post Mrs Chip - agree totally. We are letting things pile up against us and doing nothing about it, and one day we'll turn round and find we're right back in 1850 and have to start all over again!
TTBT, I never had to watch my weight in my life until I got ME and stopped work. Now I've put on a stone and cannot get it off !! I hardly eat anything but I also hardly ever move far from the couch lol. But what works best is to stick to a real old-fashioned kind of eating. Porridge for breakfast, home made soup at noon, and a bigger meat meal at teatime. No rubbish in between (apart from sweeties which ate NOT RUBBISH) and no junk like crisps or fizzy juice. I found it was hard at first after being used to snacking at work from canteen or machines - but it's surprising how soon your body adjusts.
Re people's remarks on food banks thats half canny-be-bothered-ness and half snootyness I think!
Generally Mrs C and Mar,
If your daily pattern of life is up early in the morning, work or doing something during the day and to bed at a usualy time. I think that you are spot on.
Certainly about going to bed and giving your body a lot of work trying to digest what you have eaten(this could be another reason why people don't feel hungry when they wake and avoid Breakfast. We all now that the clue is in the name of that first meal of the day.
I suppose it's ok having the main meal at night as long as you are allowing 3-4 hours between eating and going to bed. Then again if you have it earlier in the day, your tasks will burn it off and as said give you energy.
And originally, many used to only have a small bowl of cereal or a slice of toast as a put off at supper to get you through the night with a warm milky drink.
Makes sense to me...
You are probably better having smaller portions and having a few meals spread across the day.
Good examples of eating but being at our healthiest and leanest probably are looking at what we ate during the war and we were also better off eating less."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

I put 1lb on this morning but I have been scoffing of an evening. I'll take head the protein rice breakfast. I've had a nectarine for my breakfast and i know in the next hour i'll be hungry and graving a sugar rush.
The mascara on the white brows has worked a treat! Thanks
Once people had money, could buy the items that fills their homes but now find themselves with out the income to feed their families. It can happen out the blue. It can spread throughout the classes. But what happened in our history was if you couldn't afford to eat or pay for your fuel you sold your assets. I can see why there's a bit 'but they have a wide screen TV'. It's difficult isn't it.
I think that is a very fair point Fuddle,
My priorities are food, heat and a roof over my head. And here we do all we can to see that even if we have to ration those essentials due to low income(whether because of benefits/low wages)
But whilst there are some people who are scroungers, the official government statitisics rarely talked of by politicians or the media, say that fraud is approx 1%, so 99% are genuine but the media will always find the worst examples. That then turns the population in on itself so it becomes divided.
And a lot of assumptions are made. I have a sattelite dish so I bet people think I have Sky(I don't)but I can watch Freesat(which is like Freeview)but with more channels. The clue is in the name it's free. When I had Sky sometime ago I never took the movie or sports channels.
Of course some on benefits have a wide screen tv but as far as I know you can only buy widescreen tv's so when as in my case when my tv wore out(30 years old)I had to buy widescreen. And they have come down in price so probably cost roughy the same or less than the tv's they replace.
And knowing how your life can change so quickly, the tv's and similar items may have been purchased before they hit hard times.
Every household is different and we have to be careful not to tar everyone with the same brush or be too judgemental.
I also try to avoid using anecdotal or examples that come through gossip to condemn others. It's like I could meet someone "Not Working" and they look ok but I don't know what is going on inside of them health wise.
Unless, they tell me their lifestory, so I know their circumstances. They might not be working because they are caring for a sick parent or child...I'm sure that there are many more examples could be given.
But of course even I know there will be some households that neglect their familes and put luxuries first.
There will be a fair amount of people from all walks of life affected to a lesser or greater extent and seeing what has happened in Greece and is likely in Italy, Spain, Portugal and now there are problems in France. We know things are already tough in Ireland. I don't think we've heard the worst of what is coming here yet."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Primark have childrens PJ's for £5 again. Very fluffy these ones are and good to see some cheaper as the cheapest I could see a few weeks back were £8. Very happy there.
Also Alfie's nail clipping normally costs us £10 at the vets. I have done it myself today so that's been a saving. I should say that his nails don't grow long because he isn't walked (he is!) it's just that I take him over the fields in the mud (he's in his element sniffing) as opposed to walking the abrasive paths. So another DIY lesson learned that will cost us zilch.
Having the bean enchiladas a cauli cheese tonight :rotfl: DH isn't happy.
EVOO cleaning method. I've been doing it for about 3 months and will never go back. I just wondered if the olive oil takes off waterproof mascara? I thought it might be sensible to replace mine when it's ran out with the waterproof stuff as I have it on my brows :rotfl:0 -
I am reading but at moment not sure where my life is going to take me and so not going to bore anyone, but here is anyone needs me
Hugs and Love to all xxxNeed to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch
