Fuddle am so glad you had a nice dinner, its lovely to have a little treat

I am having a blinking horrible day - I expected it to be awful (it usually is) but had no idea how low it would go. Next year I am switching the phone off, disconnecting the laptop and staying in bed. :)

The only positive was that the roof is finished, the builders arrived en masse (four vans full) and got it all done.

Was it your birthday Yesterday ? Hugs for a better day today x
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

I love both your signatures Molly :)

Yes, my grandad was a Miner and I grew up in a mining village that seriously lost it's way when the mines closed. The worst effects were the social effects. The place has changed drastically from when I was a kid. They say the same in the village I live in now, that it's changed and not so nice place to live anymore. Many don't have any respect for themselves round here and that makes it difficult to live amongst because it means things like they swear in front of your children, they let their dogs foul outside the school, they drop their litter where ever they please and go to the Coop in their pj's.

There's the argument that socially it low because of a lack of jobs and people don't have much money. 30 years ago I think that argument stands but right now people round here can't be arrised to go get a job, don't need to get a job and don't want to get a job.

People who have little money should not be tarred with the bone idle people's brush. Each and everyone of us on here is counting our pennies but I can tell that we all have respect for ourselves and the area we live in. There's a massive difference. The benefit system has created a section of our society that goes against every chord of the lowest of the low - working class. (I can say that, I'm working class through and through, and damn proud especially when I learn about how my people coped and survived in the early 1900's)

eeek, I may have been a bit confrontational with my views there. Please just ignore me this chilly but sunny Saturday morning. I was rudely awakened by an escapee dog and can hear my little ones bickering. I think I need a morning cuppa x

Edit: gawd, I'm not saying everyone on benefits is those people. oI love that we have a benefit system, I had to use the benefits system myself. i think we should be so proud we have a system that helps our frail and needy. What I'm saying is that because the system is there it gets abused and relied upon when really, maybe, probably some people could get themselves work and gain a little self respect because of it. So sorry. I wish I hadn't said anything now

I think we have lost that fierce tough pride that working people once had. Our grandparents would have kept up appearances, kept themselves smart and sent kids to school neat & tidy even if there was nothing to eat - because you had to have pride in yourself.
Re benefits I personally always thought food stamps was better, but a lot of people don't agree. Food stamps and decent filling school meals.
I grew up a pit village in the good times, in the 50s. Miners worked hard and had good money, and they all had their wee bit garden or allotment & kept pigeons or budgies or canaries - maybe after a lifetime shut down a dark pit they loved the joy and freedom that comes with wings :) We had a lot of Poles who had fought for us in WW2 and they were such really tough men, amazing. I'm so proud of my roots and my kind of people - but so sad to see them gone now.

Fuddle you are almost describing the town I live in.
I am soo tired this morning. We had a bunch of ratbag teens rampaging in the street late into the night. I gave up at 3.30 and got up. I did lie on the sofa about six and slept till 8.30. There are nights like that when I wish I had a machine gun turret on the roof. I hate hate hate this town.
  • Oh Fuddle, no need to apologise for what you said. I understood you didn't mean everyone on benefits. It did make me laugh though as you tried to make your point - I do that all the time!

As you know we're looking in to starting a food bank but people say "really? why do you need that when people have large tv's, sky, holidays and I don't get that?" I'm forever explaining that it's like that for some people but there's people who really do need our help and we can't not help them just because we think some people get too much out of the system. It's on a referral system anyway so I hope those that really do need the help get it.

  • I'm having a quiet morning, the kids are away with DH swimming so I'm getting some computer time. I'm feeling a bit low - I'm a bit of a yoyo dieter and before I can lose weight I have to get really down about it. I've started a diet everyday this week and broken it about lunchtime. I know what I need to do and how to lose the weight - it's the motivation to do it. I have clothes in sizes 10 to 16 (I'm very small so any extra weight is very noticeable) in the house and will wear all of them throughout a year. Why can't I just lose the weight and keep it off?

Sorry for that moan. I had no-one else to tell. DH always practical just says "maybe you should exercise" but I just want to moan and get it off my chest.

Hope everyone has a nice sunny and relaxed Saturday

  • Morning Toughies, lovely sunny day here, but goodness it's chilly. The air outside smells of Autumn, old leaves and a hint of woodsmoke. People here are beginning to light the woodstoves at night and many are having roaring bonfires, particularly on the allotments and the gardens are full of Michaelmas Daisies in various shades of mauve, it's lovely.

FUDDLE - I won't ignore you if you don't mind, I think you raise a very valid point in what you say. It feels to me as if we all who post on here have that pride in managing and making a good life on the resources we have at our individual disposal. There is a worlds difference between that and relying totally on state provisions to keep us going from day to day. I know some of us have to have help, but they are the ones who most deserve it. We all try, we all manage somehow to make the most of everything available and all share with each other the knowledge either skills, or offers in the shops, or recipes every way we can. The best thing we have to my way of thinking is the support of all of us, the joking, the morale lifting, the sympathy and the caring shown by all is heartwarming and helps us all help ourselves. You're all great, Cheers Lyn xxx.
