Bulk LPG - Cheapest suppliers / supply route?

Not sure if this avenue has been explored before but following the publicity surrounding Which magazine's "Big Switch", I emailed Which to ask if they could investigate lpg pricing for unfortunate souls not on mains gas.
This is the reply:
Hello
Thanks for your email.
Unfortunately the reason we haven't looked into oil supply is because customers like yourself seem to be in the minority and we are currently focusing on the energy situation of the wider public. This is not to say that we will never expand to include oil and propane gas fuel supply.
I have passed your comments on to the relevant departments as head office are always eager to hear customers comments like this as it is something that we could possibly look into for a future article.
Thank you again for your feedback
Although this looks like a "round robin" type reply perhaps if other Which subsribers do similar we may get some action?0 -
You dont have to sign a contract to get some gas, just order there minimum delivery and pay by card, if they ask tell them you dont know if your staying with LPG as the new ownerIndeed - my present thoughts are to lump it with Flogas for the initial 2 years, while exploring other options for subsequent and following years. As time is against me on this one.
Unless it is worth making the hop to Calor or Avanti now, and waiting a further couple of weeks to get some gas while the change of gas tank ownership takes place...0 -
Just registered on this forum having read some interesting comments that ring very true in my experience.
My two year contract for LPG bulk domestic supply from Flogas is coming to an end this Summer, and this forum might have views on the following:
For info, over the past 5 years, my average LPG consumption has been 1700 litres p/a. This heats and supplies hot water to my 1996 four bed insulated double glazed home in Glos. The boiler is a 6 year old Worcester-Bosch condensing combi boiler.
I have been a "loyal" Flogas, and earlier British Gas, customer for 16 years but suspect, that in the LPG world, loyalty does not seem to come into the equation.
I have always negotiated one year and, in Summer 2010, a two year contract, only to find that after the fixed 6 month period, almost to the day, the price has gone up.
For the current contract ending this Summer, I started at 41p + vat and am currently paying 64.5p + vat, add to this the standing charge of course.
The price increases for the current two year contract starting in Summer 2010 have been:
Winter 2010 increase by 8.5p
Spring 2011 increase 7p
Summer 2011 increase 8p
This is a staggering price increase of 57% after one year into the contract, fortunately I have 70% gas in the tank so hopefully will last until the contract ends in the Summer when I will be able to negotiate / switch.
Am I the only pensioner paying 64.5p + vat for LPG?
Any views / advice would be gratefully received.
One other point, does any contributor have any comments to make on the Flogas Top-Up scheme?0 -
Hi Thermal and thanks for your post.
There would be blood on the moon if 'mains' gas went up by 57% in the same period. :cool:0 -
Hi everyone
Just popping onto the thread as I've had an argument with Flogas engineers today about whether my tank is indeed illegally sited (sitting under the canopy of an 60ft Beech tree). The guy said it only needs to be 1.5m away from the tree....And muttered something vague about "in the 10 years or so the tank has been in". He was cut short when I pointed out that the tree was probably about 200 years old - honestly, was he really about to tell me that the tree wasn't there when the tank was fitted :rotfl:
Anyway I just read through the last few posts and although I'm happy we negotiated our rate down a bit, despite being stuck with Flogas again, I am less amused to see how little gas you all use! We have used <drumroll please> 1850 litres in 4 months. And that is with a brand new boiler
Turns out our minimum temperature setting was 16 degrees, which meant our boiler had to be on basically full time to maintain. Plumber didn't leave us with instructions for the wireless thermostat, so we didn't know that is what it was doing every day whilst we were out at work.
Anyhow it's now set at a lower temperature, so fingers crossed we start to save some money now :cool:0% card was £1126.91 / Now £1502.37

Well, well. I have just received a letter from those nice people at Countrywide saying that with much regret (!!) they are going to have to increase the price of LPG by 5ppl from 8th March. This is only a couple of months after a 3.5ppl price rise.
Apparently this is down to a 17% price rise in crude oil costs sine January. Also National newspapers are reporting record diesel prices.
I'm glad I managed to get a fill at the old, pre 3.5p increase, which should last me until well into the summer. As an aside, when I challenged the basis for the previous price rise I never even got a reply to my e-mail.0 -
I suspect that the Countrywide tanker will be visiting me over the next seven days as I'm nearing the 20% level. After Hornet's revelation, it'll be interesting to see what I'm charged per litre. And I wonder how full the tank will be after their visit; might I guess that it'll be the maximum that can be squeezed in in case the price drops over the next few months? Must stop dreaming - the price never drops does it.............0

1. The price you ordered at IS the price you pay. Surely? If you are waiting for an auto-fill maybe you should ring and quote the last price you were informed of. I certainly held BP to the price I ordered at - even when another price rise letter came between order and fill.
2. "the price never drops" - it certainly DOES - for several independents mentioned on the forum - including Extra Fuel.
